The Wearing of the Bins

10,000 Birds

I’ve been to a lot of birding festivals—sometimes as a speaker, sometimes as a trip leader, and sometimes just because I love going to birding festivals. Last weekend I was in North Dakota attending The Potholes & Prairie Birding Festival in Carrington, ND. If you’ve never been to the potholes region of the Great Plains, you need to get it on your birding bucket list now.

Animal Ethics

To the Editor: Re “ Hooked on Meat ,” by Mark Bittman (column, June 2): The other day, I asked the manager of our local chain grocery store why we were offered only Peruvian asparagus in the springtime. Remember when fresh, locally grown asparagus would come in? No longer. Why eat produce that has no flavor? Why not go next door and grab a salty, fatty burger in a bag?

Black-crowned Night-Heron Eating a Fish

10,000 Birds

It is not every day that one gets to explore Central Park with a friend, birder, and first-time visitor to the Big Apple. It is even more odd to be birding Central Park in June, when migration has essentially wrapped up and all that is left are breeders and stragglers. But that is what I did yesterday morning because Nate was in town, I had some time available, and we are birders!

Photos from the Auto Loop at Brigantine

10,000 Birds

Despite my manic work schedule of late my positioning in southern New Jersey does lend itself to an occasional, if brief, birding outing when the stars align properly and I am near a birdy spot when I suddenly find myself with a free hour or so. A couple of times I have had this happen near the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, universally known to birders as Brigantine or “The Brig&# and took advantage of the time I had to take a spin around the auto loop.

Yellow-headed Blackbirds ( Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus ) are robin-sized blackbirds found in prairie and mountain meadow wetlands of the western and central United States and Canada. History repeating itself

10,000 Birds

If studying insects would lead you to suppose that God had an “an inordinate fondness for beetles&# , studying the pre-human avifauna of the Pacific would lead you to conclude that God was also quite partial to rails. Pretty much every major island, and many smaller ones, had an endemic rail or two. They were descendants of flighted mainland ancestors which managed to get pretty much everywhere, from tropical atolls to windswept frozen rocks, in most instances losing the ability to fly aft

Pelagic Birds of the Eastern Mediterranean

10,000 Birds

The Eastern Mediterranean Sea is what oceanographers call ultra oligotrophic , meaning that it has low primary productivity. Basically there just aren’t enough nutrients to sustain a lot of plankton, so the entire food chain is impoverished. And as a result, fun things like pelagic birds are rather scarce. Oh don’t get me wrong, we still get Yelkouan Shearwaters and Scopoli’s Shearwaters , but even those appear scarce.

AOU to leave Mexican Duck in limbo

When the American Ornithologists’ Union publishes its annual North American checklist update next month, many birders will be disappointed to see that a proposal to re-split Mexican Duck ( Anas diazi ) from Mallard ( Anas platyrhynchos ) has failed. The Mexican Duck, as its name suggests, is native to Mexico and parts of the southwestern United States, and unlike the Mallard, the Mexican Duck does not have a showy male breeding plumage; both sexes are brown throughout the year.

Their most distinctive feature is the bright red around the eye and it is very hard to mistake them for any other bird.

Aqtau Surfer Dudes

10,000 Birds

During the course of a business trip to western Kazakhstan in early April I flew from Germany to Aqtau, right at the coast of the Caspian Sea. The job assignment was to head inland the following day for a week of monitoring birds and reptiles, which goes to show just how hard some of us have to work for their dime. The shores of the Caspian Sea are excellent birding grounds, and I had great expectations and hopes for a few hours’ birding there.
