Grey-headed Gull

10,000 Birds

I was worried that I may not have a post for this weekend until I noted Corey’s submission about the Gray-hooded Gull at Coney Island, New York. The ABA is still considering its response to the gull and its provenance, but more to the point, Jochen has called its pedigree into question by asserting that it is a Ring-billed Gull x Black-headed Gull hybrid.

The Vulturine Storks

10,000 Birds

European Storks are majestic, they’re graceful and stately and all of the positively connotated adjectives that are applied to birds to which humans have a long and pleasant history rooted deep in our western cultural heritage. In fact, there’s hardly a bird in the world that has such a venerated relationship with us. They are, after all, the feathered bearers of actual children if the old stories are to be believed, and their shadow lies long over birder and non-birder alike.

After The Birds Of Summer Have Gone

10,000 Birds

The sky has been haunting me for days now. It is the featureless nature of the sea of blue, spanning from horizon to horizon, its neglect of offering a foothold to the wandering eye that binds my thoughts. They have gone. The dots in the sky, forming whirling, twirling and spiralling clouds, breaking into a dashing descent, tossing themselves from one side to the other, turning, diving, screaming, and spiralling upwards again, have vanished.

Birders Need to Embrace Evolution More Actively

10,000 Birds

Corey and I are always going on about how inextricably intertwined evolution is with birding. As a matter of fact, last time Corey overtly broached that topic, we experienced a surprising diversity of dissent. I believe, however, you’ll agree with Greg Laden when he asserts that birders need to more actively embrace evolution. He just sounds so reasonable, even when he brings Terror Birds into the conversation!

A Crowd House of Martins

10,000 Birds

A type of birding experience that I greatly enjoy is one of those moments where I’ve come across a simply huge number of birds. It can be during migration, in an enormous nesting colony, or with a very gregarious species. As I mined my old birding photos, I recalled one such experience at the Palekhori-Kambi Dam in the eastern part of the Troodos mountain range of Cyprus.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of August 2011)

10,000 Birds

Have you used August as an excuse or incentive to travel? I highly recommend it, but then again I always advocate travel, no matter the month! Would you believe my best bird of the weekend was a Screaming Piha ? Believe it, and in the ABA area no less. I took my kids on a fun whirlwind tour of Washington D.C. but my best bird of the weekend was in Baltimore, specifically the Aquarium.

Basic-Plumage Red Knots Calidris canutus

Any day that includes a sighting of a Red Knot is a good day for a birder. The bird we see in the northeastern United States, the rufa subspecies, is declining rapidly , “from a high count of 95,000 in the 80s and 90s to fewer than 10,000 earlier this year.&# Fortunately for both the birds and birders, the Red Knot is getting fast-tracked to Endangered Species protection.

Well I have done a lot of travelling in the week since I last wrote a post! I flew out of Broome and across the Northern Territory and Queensland and changed planes in Brisbane. Sorry to be a downer, but here's an article that appeared in the Huffington Post. Road birding in New Zealand

10,000 Birds

Of all the dangerous sports birders risk their necks in in the pursuit of birds, birding while driving is perhaps the most common threat to the life of a birder of all. I’m sure most birders with access to a car have a story of being driving alone happily only to almost crash after being distracted by something interesting or at least somewhat mysterious.
