Internet Wildlife Rehabilitation

10,000 Birds

Rehabbers are all – well, almost all – connected by the internet. We join listservs so we can talk to compatriots, even if they live across the country, about things like the latest treatment for aspergillosis, what’s going on with West Nile, and who’s had what kind of experience with eye infections. Every once in awhile, though, night will fall and you’ll read some kind of rant, and you know there’s a rehabber out there in cyberspace sitting in front of his/her computer with a great big glass o

Bringing Your Baby Home

4 The Love Of Animals

Guest article from Jon of ilovelabradorretrievers.com. For expectant parents who have a pet at home, one of the most common concerns they have is how will their pet cope with the new addition to the family? Babies are a heck of a lot of work and without a doubt require the majority of the attention from mom and dad, which leaves poor puppy in the position of being at the absolute bottom of the totem poll.

Frogs and Toads of the World: A Book Review by a Fairy Tale Junkie

10,000 Birds

“Peek!” Plunk. “Peek!” Plop. “Peek!” Plip. These were the sounds I heard as I walked around a small pond in Amherst, Massachusetts last week, looking for dragonflies, listening for birds. The “peeks” were loud and high-pitched. I knew the plunks, plops and plips were the sounds of frogs, green and black, jumping into the water, so camouflaged, it looked as if the grass and mud were in action.

Beak Deformities

10,000 Birds

John Mark Simmons, the co-founder of Two Birders and Binoculars , has enjoyed birding all his life and has won various birding competitions. John Mark also has an interest in the intersection of ornithology and aberration, as we learn in his first guest post on 10,000 Birds… Beak deformities have baffled scientists for a number of years. They come in many forms: nuthatches with extremely long bills, thrashers with oddly curved bills, and chickadees with many different shapes and sizes of

Safe Glow LED Dog Collar

4 The Love Of Animals

Baby recently got a very fun item to review, something super awesome for people who love to take their dogs out walking when it gets a bit darker! Yes, a glowing collar! The Safe Glow dog collar, which is well made from wear-resistant nylon and houses a flexible, light-transmitting polymer core that illuminates when the collar is turned on. Not only does it light up with a press of the button, but there are three different settings to choose from; steady glow, slow flash, and fast flash.

We are so excited for the new Disney film, “Frankenweenie”! Not only do we enjoy Tim Burton’s movies, but of course, a story about a boy and his dog is sure to be a hit in our household. “Frankenweenie” follows in the footsteps of Tim Burton’s other stop-motion animated films “Corpse Bride” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas”—both of which were nominated for Academy Awards®.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of August 2012)

10,000 Birds

Hot enough for you? If you’re suffering through a sweltering patch of record summer heat, you may feel much as Ralph Waldo Emerson did when he penned this line: “When summer opens, I see how fast it matures, and fear it will be short; but after the heats of July and August, I am reconciled, like one who has had his swing, to the cool of autumn.” But is it ever too hot or too cold to get out and look at some birds?

Red-necked Stint AND Sharp-tailed Sandpiper at Jamaica Bay

10,000 Birds

Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Queens, NY, 3 August 2008 It was while watching flocks of shorebirds on Friday on Cape Cod (an adventure I will soon describe) that I first heard of a Red-necked Stint being found at Jamaica Bay. I got back-to-back calls that I let go to voicemail from Jory and Will , my upstate birding buddies, and when I checked my voicemail I found out the news.

Mud, and those who seek it

10,000 Birds

While those to the north are busy wallowing in shorebirds of impressive diversity and numbers , we to the south sit and wait for the scraps to trickle down into our own scopeviews. I can’t imagine what it must be like to have a bona fide shorebird hotspot minutes from one’s home, the mind boggles at the implications. The mud. The stink.

Interesting Ads In The Wildlife Industry

10,000 Birds

As I’ve switched over to paid corporate birding (doing bird surveys for companies that want to put up wind farms or transmission lines), I’ve been fascinated by the world that has been opened to me and differences from the bird feeding world. Whenever I get my hands on a trade publication for any industry, my favorite thing to do is see what is being advertised in the magazine.

Birding around Derby

10,000 Birds

As I mentioned last week we had a few days away birding and camping and I will tell you about some other places that are good to look for birds around the Derby area. Derby is approximately 225kms from Broome and there are a few water crossings before you get there. The first significant water body worth stopping at is about 50kms to the south and you can easily pull over after you have crossed the bridge at Cockatoo Creek.

Where Are You Birding This Second Weekend of August 2012?

But I’ve been on the move a lot lately at a time when responsibilities in my home territory continue to mount. One wonders how birding tour leaders and industry reps manage to embrace life on the road.

Rafting Possums Pose a Threat to Kapiti

10,000 Birds

Kapiti, a predator free island near Wellington that I’ve spoken of before , came close to receiving another mammalian invader recently. Fishermen out near the island spotted a possum riding a floating log close to the island. It seems unlikely that the possum made it to the island, but it shows how vulnerable even the most important reserves are and how important it is to move towards a mammalian predator free New Zealand. a.

Requiem for a Bat: Mysterious Bat Deaths in the Rockies
