Most readers of 10,000 Birds know that nature is full of surprises and that we aren’t the only ones with a lock on intelligence and creativity. Still it is always nice to add to the evidence of animal intellect. This all happened as I was suffering from the photographic affliction known as “light denial,” where I’m convinced there is still some light but sadly the day has ended and darkness reigns.

On a recent visit to the Poo Ponds we came across a White-bellied Sea-Eagle enjoying lunch. These eagles are generally seen soaring along the coastline looking for food or nesting inland at the ephemeral lakes. They are a magnificent sight with their wing span at approximately 2 metres and their distinct upswept wings. They chase and successfully catch shorebirds as well as ducks and can be seen taking fish from the ocean as well.

In my previous blog about Bird Photography Equipment , I reviewed the Canon EF 300 f/4 lens with the teleconverter Kenko C-AF 2X Teleplus Pro 300 DGX. I have had a couple of weeks of testing this configuration and further testing revealed some additional amazing results that I did not expect. New York City killed less Canada Geese this year than any year since they started rounding the geese up and slaughtering them. The cullings have happened every year since the 2009 emergency landing of a US Airways plane in the Hudson River after the plane struck geese and was disabled. If you have been birding for any length of time, you will almost certainly have built up a fine collection of field guides. To stay abreast of the current taxanomic thinking requires regular updating, but do we discard the old ones to leave space for the new? Do we bookcase! The laminated chipboard planks that house my collection groan under the weight of books written back in the days when the pinnacle of observational optics was a monocle.

A few days ago I had the opportunity to visit the Schliffkopf, one of the highest summits of the northern Black Forest, in order to add Citril Finches to my year list – and also to see them again for the first time since 1995. Citril Finches used to be rather common on the sub-alpine meadows of the Black Forest, but their population is undergoing a serious decline and it is currently feared they will soon be extinct in Germany outside the German Alps.

Most everyone has a spot that works for them, where they can go and see something great pretty much every time. Lucky people have more than one, I guess some people don’t have any. It’s hard to believe it’s been two weeks since BlogPaws. It was so much fun, we learned so much! We listened to amazing speakers, and watched some tear jerkers ( Hero Dogs of 9/11 , and tributes to pets over the rainbow bridge). It was a great time, something we will not forget. Pet lovers are some of the best people on the planet. Being at BlogPaws just reinforced how amazing, friendly, and fun, animal lovers are.

Danny and Ben were rescued on April 27 by the Ohio SPCA after receiving a complaint about malnourished horses. They were brought to the Ohio SPCA Farm Sanctuary to recover physically and heal spiritually. Little Ben was so sick that he had to be transported to Woodland Run Equine Veterinary Center. Danny (son of a Budweiser Clydesdale) and Ben are receiving the best care possible to ensure their survival.

The White-backed Woodpecker is the hardest resident woodpecker to find in Europe. Dendrocopos leucotos is absent from western Europe but is found in northern, central, and eastern Europe and across Asia as far east as Japan and Korea. It requires large stands of mature forest with lots of dead and dying trees, so managed forests are often unattractive to it.

As you already know I am a big fan of my Queens list. Other than my overall life list it is the one to which I most like to add a bird. This explains why when I was upstate celebrating my parents’ fortieth anniversary on Sunday I was not to happy to learn that a Ruff was found at Jamaica Bay. Ruffs are awesome and belong in Eurasia and I had never seen one in the western hemisphere, let alone in my home borough.

Its a hard life being a bird but its especially hard if you’re a crane. Of the fifteen species of cranes alive today eleven are considered vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered. The Wattled Crane unfortunately finds itself amongst the majority, with an estimated 7,000 birds remaining on the planet. Like many other species of cranes, the primary reason for its decline is the degradation, destruction and loss of wetland habitat.

Well, it is nesting season and being a nest box monitor with three Bluebird Trails, I thought I should rectify the blatant lack of coverage on 10000 Birds of one of the most iconic North American birds of our time. Living in California, I am of course speaking of the Western Bluebird ( Sialia mexicana ). The Western Bluebird , like all bluebirds, is a secondary cavity nester (more about cavity nesters in an upcoming post).

A dolphin calf was born Saturday morning 6/30/12 at 8:47 a.m. at SeaWorld Orlando. The young calf’s sex is unknown at this time, but it has been seen nursing and bonding with its mom, Starkey, both a good indication that the calf is doing well. This is Starkey’s sixth birth. Park guests can see the pair at SeaWorld’s Dolphin Nursery where pregnant dolphins, new mothers, their calves and experienced moms live together.

Many of us in the United States feel like we just had a weekend, when we really only enjoyed a pyrotechnic mid-week holiday. Early summer surely feels like the season that keeps on giving! Fortunately, nature lovers usually know how to take advantage of extra time to ramble and roam. I saw spectacular lake birds yesterday, so I’ll likely stay in the city this weekend to visit one of Rochester’s multifarious festivals.
