Humane Society Puts Pressure on South Carolina's Bear Baying

Critter News

Ugh, this is barbaric and right out of the dark ages. From the AP. A declawed, defanged bear is chained to a stake as hunting dogs bark and snap, trying to force the bear to stand on its hind legs. The training exercise called bear baying is intended to make the bears easier to shoot in the wild and it's only allowed in South Carolina. Armed with new undercover video of four such events, the Humane Society of the United States is pressuring state officials to explicitly outlaw the practice, whic

Animal Ethics

To the Editor: Re “ A Hen’s Space to Roost ” (Week in Review, Aug. 15): We are glad to see an article describing the intensive confinement of egg-laying chickens, but we disagree when it says that animal advocates and consumers are “driving big changes” in the treatment of chickens. Thus far, the state ballot initiatives and agreements that will expand space for chickens (as well as for gestating pigs and veal calves) are really very minor.

On the Keeping of Endangered Fishes

Animal Person

An Animal Person reader wrote me with the following question: There are many species of cichlids in Lake Victoria that are on the verge of extinction, and most are hardy and small enough to be kept in an aquarium. There are conservation efforts to save these species by individual aquarists, who are keeping and breeding them in hopes that they can someday be reintroduced into the lake.

Bacon Bubble Buddy

4 The Love Of Animals

Another fun toy from Think Geek! Baby sure loved the Bacon Bubble Buddy. It’s a fun toy for both dog and human. The bubbles fill a small reservoir in the blower, and then with a few pulls of the trigger, bacon flavored bubbles come out for your dog to catch. They are safe to eat, and though I didn’t try tasting one, they did smell like bacon!

Help the Almagordo Chimpanzees

Critter News

Here's an action alert from Physicians for Social Responsibility. "Since 2001, chimpanzees have been housed at APF, where they cannot be used for research. However, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) plans to move the chimpanzees—many of them at least 30 years old—to the Southwest National Primate Research Facility in San Antonio, Texas, where they can be used in painful, invasive experiments.".

PETA Enters Alamagordo Primate Controversy

Critter News

Here's an opinion piece from Ingrid Newkirk arguing to stop the transfer of 202 "retired" chimpanzees to a Texas facility where they may be subjected to more experimentation. The Governor of New Mexico has already met with the National Institutes of Health to try and stop this transfer with no apparent success. Some of the animals are 60 years old and veterans of the US space program.

Sandpiper Species Heading Towards Extinction

Critter News

Really sad. The Spoon-billed Sandpiper, one of the world's most threatened birds, is rapidly heading towards extinction because young birds are being targeted for human consumption. Spoon-billed Sandpipers nest only in the far north-east of Russia. In 2000, around 1,000 breeding pairs were known, but by 2009, the number had plummeted to just 120-220 pairs, a decline of 88%.

Make sure you look after your pet with insurance

4 The Love Of Animals

According to the RSPCA, in 2008 there was a 57% increase in the number of animals abandoned by their owners in the UK. A similar problem is also occurring in the United States, where the Humane society of the United states claims that up to 8 million animals enter animal shelters each year, showing that this is an international problem. It’s hard to ignore the link to the credit crunch, which has likely affected pet owner’s abilities to meet the food and vet bills needed for their pets.
