On the Fence

10,000 Birds

With an election coming up I thought I would present this collection of strictly non-political, indecisive birds, who are on the fence about a variety of issues. The Red-tailed Hawk above is on the fence about flying off, or staying for the rest of this post. The Green Heron is a mysterious bird, on the fence about whether to reveal more of its nature, or return to skulk in the reeds as might be expected.

Tom Regan on the Animal-Rights Movement

Animal Ethics

In issuing its condemnation of established cultural practices, the rights view is not antibusiness, not antifreedom of the individual, not antiscience, not antihuman. It is simply projustice, insisting only that the scope of justice be seen to include respect for the rights of animals. To protest against the rights view that justice applies only to moral agents, or only to human beings, and that we are within our rights when we treat animals as renewable resources, or replaceable receptacles, or

Our house stinks, but not anymore!

4 The Love Of Animals

Our house suffers from a good amount of stink. And no, it’s not the pets! It’s actually our house, because of how it is built there just isn’t much airflow and things get stagnate and stinky quickly. This leads me to always be on the look out for ways to freshen up the house. Since I am a BzzAgent, I was able to try out the new Glade Expressions® Collection recently (for free).

Diabolical Wood-Warbler Identification Quiz

10,000 Birds

It has been far too long since the last of the diabolical quizzes. And this quiz is truly diabolical. Horribly diabolical. Diabolical squared. At least, I think it is. I tend to judge these things rather poorly. As always, you are to use the comments to provide the common name of the bird in each image. The winner is the one who gets the most correct answers soonest and wins the adulation of everyone.

Birds of Spain

10,000 Birds

Spain, with its vibrant culture and natural beauty, has always been at the top of my list of countries to visit. And with all those eagles, larks, and sandgrouse, not to mention Azure-winged Magpie , the Iberian Peninsula holds a prominent place on my birding bucket list. If your head hasn’t yet been filled with dreams of the avians of España, wait until you see this video.

Vexing Vireo

10,000 Birds

Before this morning I knew that I had never seen a Bell’s Vireo. After this morning I was sure that I had seen one. Now I am not so sure, but think that I didn’t. Why not? Read on! Yesterday morning Dick Veit reported a Bell’s Vireo , what would be the third in history of New York State, at Mount Loretto Unique Area on Staten Island, the forgotten borough of New York City.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of September 2012)

10,000 Birds

Anyone attuned to the roving of raptors and peregrinations of passerines is probably sporting a big smile this morning thinking about the weekend’s sightings. I’m looking forward to hearing about some astounding avifauna on the move. I, of course, was focused mainly on Eagles, Falcons, and Seahawks this weekend. Fortunately, a fancy fall warbler came calling to my backyard while I was planted in front of the television; I pulled myself away long enough to admire a sleek Wilson’

Birding a Flock of Canada Geese

10,000 Birds

Canada Geese are a nuisance. They poop everywhere, they are far too common, they take down airplanes. Birders tend to ignore them, non-birders tend to loathe them, and few defend or admire them. That is really a shame. It is not the fault of Canada Geese that they have become a trash bird. Blame human intervention in the form of breeding programs so that there would be more to hunt.

In the Halls of the Mountain Ash

10,000 Birds

It’s that time of year again. Sidewalks are speckled, cars are spattered. Flocks of Cedar Waxwings are buzzing everywhere, streaked juveniles mingling with creamy adults on their pilgrimages through the parks, gorging as they go. American Robins are coming up off the lawns to partake as well. In short, the berries are ripe, and I think it is worth knowing a bit more about them.

A September shoreline

10,000 Birds

Wandering along the beach on a regular basis you do notice the changes throughout the year. The start of this month has seen some changes along Cable Beach and with the wind changing direction the sea has become quite choppy. The weather is still perfect for wandering aimlessly along and monitoring the nesting of our resident shorebirds. Sadly it has been a poor season so far and the Pied Oystercatchers are currently on their second attempt at breeding.

Buff-breasted Sandpipers in Riverhead, Long Island

There is no better place to find grasspipers in New York State than the sod farms on eastern Long Island in autumn. Buff-breasted Sandpipers , Baird’s Sandpipers , and American Golden Plovers , all shorebirds that tend to eschew the shore in favor of wide expanses of wide-open, flat, wet, grassy habitat, show up nearly every autumn on the vast tracts of land dedicated to providing people with the luscious yards that they want.

Of course, he compared the cranes left behind to his political opponents , calling them “weak.

Bernard E. Rollin on Animals as Ends

Animal Ethics

As we mentioned, Kant restricts having intrinsic value or being an end in itself to rational beings, but it is difficult to see why this should be so. Surely any sentient or conscious being has states that matter to it in a positive or negative way—pleasure matters to an animal in a positive way, pain or fear in a negative way. Since it can value what happens to it, it has intrinsic value.

Eye Color in Birds

10,000 Birds

Two weeks ago I wrote a post entitled, “How do Birds get their Color?” This got me thinking about eye color in birds. As humans we place exceptional value in the beauty of an individual’s eyes. Most of us will have heard the saying, “Eyes are the windows to the soul” But besides the cosmetic value, the color of our eyes provides little other benefit to our lives.

Birding can be a double-edged sword, getting out birding, seeing, hearing and ‘doing’ birding is as we all know incredibly good for the soul and simply the best way to spend time. Our experience on the ground confirms your reporting that this trade is increasingly tied to organized crime.
