Few living things are created perfect. But I think hummingbirds are as close to evolutionary perfection as one can get. The SPCA does some amazing work on behalf of our animal friends all over the globe. They have many wonderful programs, one of which helps both animals and people. Gene Bauer from Farm Sanctuary appears in this article. Pretty intense, but I hope people read it. There is a disturbing hedonism to eating. I went to a restaurant for a work lunch and everyone ate meat but me, even the animal lovers. We just don't think about where that flesh came from.and most of us don't care.

The concept that bird watchers can accurately identify birds by their general aspect and behavior rather than by any specific field marks has not only long been accepted, but is actually gaining greater popularity every year. One might debate just how useful or specific this methodology may be, but all agree on its overall utility. A controversy does exist, however, regarding exactly what to call it: are we talking about giss or jizz ?

I never would have thought that a film that focused entirely on North American sparrows could be so delightful. But the new second edition of Watching Sparrows * by Michael Male and Judy Fieth, who have a whole series of bird films already produced or in production , not only kept me staring at the screen but drew in family members to see what I was watching, to say nothing of my cats, who were enthralled by the sparrows singing on screen.

As you might surmise, I spend an inordinate amount of time every day thinking about both birding and blogging. Perhaps we’re alike in that. Where we may differ substantially, however, is that those thoughts are often crowded out by more pressing considerations of the fine art of SAT and ACT instruction. As the owner of what has been called ( by me ) western New York’s leading test prep organization , I have to meticulously analyze every aspect of these crucial college entrance exams.

I was lucky enough to get off work early the other day and thought I would head out toward Battle Creek Wildlife Area and try to get some better photos of the Harlan’s Red-tailed Hawk I’ve seen on Dersch Road. This area we call “Millville Plains&# is mostly grassland and oak savannah and is an excellent place to see raptors. Red-tailed Hawks and American Kestrels are a sure thing and Ferruginous Hawk, Merlin and Prairie Falcon can be found by the experienced observer.

These large-nosed avian pearls live at surprisingly high altitude; I have seen them as high as 2800 meters and as low as 1800 meters. My first encounter with this bird was very memorable at the edge of the Mindo-Nambillo Reserve near the road that goes from San Tadeo to Bellavista. The second time I photographed this bird was at Recinto 23 de Junio at the high ridge to the east of the town.

Kieran Reid, of the famed New Zealand All Blacks , is now, in addition to his rugby duties, an ambassador for the Yellow-Eyed Penguin Trust, and serves to raise awareness about the plight of the penguin, which is also known as the Hoiho. How great is it that a big, tough athlete is trying to help a little, cute penguin? It’s wonderful to see an athlete get it, and Reid certainly does.

Last Sunday we decided it was high time we took advantage of the low tide to explore the reef on the Indian Ocean side of Broome. The tides were perfect, as low tide would be 0.78m at 5:30pm after a high of 9.93m at 11am. This may seem like a large tide, but it got even bigger during this week and the largest was on Tuesday when it went from 10.56m to 0.29m.

Way back on the first day of March, Doug, who is a good birder and a decent guy despite his Brooklyn roots, and I were exploring Plum Beach, a location you will recall from the absurdly cooperative Clapper Rails and Nelson’s Sparrows that I digiscoped last year. The massive flocks of Sandhill Cranes that stop over in Nebraska on their way north are becoming a bigger and bigger tourist attraction.
