Eurasian Wryneck Jynx torquilla

10,000 Birds

There are two species in the Old World woodpecker genus that sounds like birds that birders would never be able to see. They are literal jinx birds in that their genus name is “ Jynx.” Jynx torquilla , the Eurasian Wryneck , and Jynx ruficollis , the Red-throated Wryneck , are both atypical woodpeckers in that they lack the stiff tail for perching on tree trunks and the strong bill that would let them get at prey in hard wood.

Brown Creepers Nesting at Lassen Volcanic National Park

10,000 Birds

Brown Creeper ( Certhia americana ) photos by Larry Jordan A few weeks ago I headed up to Lassen Volcanic National Park to photograph a family of Water Ouzels that one of our Audubon members sighted near the visitor center there at Manzanita Lake. Since it’s only about an hour drive for me, I like to go up and scout the area for rare and nesting birds before our annual Audubon Camp Out and the timing was perfect.

Dog Collars

4 The Love Of Animals

By Augie Berings, Bering’s Hardware. Nearly every dog owner buys a collar for their new pet but few are aware of the long history and many different types of collars. Archaeology has demonstrated that humans were crafting collars for their animals at least 7000 years ago and the possibility that this is a conservative estimate is large. These ancient Egyptian collars were engraved with the animals’ names, indicating that they served a function very similar to most modern collars: dec

A little hedgehog story

10,000 Birds

After Corey shared his story of his hedgehog experience in Hungary I thought you may like to see some rather adorable pictures of a young European Hedgehog in England. It appears that hedgehog numbers in the UK have dropped by 25% in the last 10 years , so every hedgehog that can be saved is extremely worthwhile. Sadly you do tend to see more roadkill hedgehogs than hedgehogs enjoying the countryside.

Real Time Tracking of Rarities

10,000 Birds

Early this morning I was out on the south end of the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge looking at common shorebirds and hoping for rare shorebirds. The best birds that I had managed were a couple of Pectoral Sandpipers , a Western Sandpiper , and the Peregrine Falcon that has been keeping the shorebirds stirred up and the birders frustrated almost since shorebird season started.

The Summer Doldrums

10,000 Birds

Nothing is quite as much of a downer to a birder than the summer doldrums. Migration hasn’t really kicked in, the breeders aren’t tied to breeding territories any more, and it is hot and sweaty outside. Uncomfortable weather and a lack of birds make birders grumpy. What can a bird blogger do but try to write his way out of the summer doldrums?

Where Are You Birding This First Weekend of August 2012?

10,000 Birds

The summer span of school-free days from late June to early September always seemed to me to be an experience all United States students held in common. Thus, I was surprised and a little saddened to learn from my Kentucky family that kids in the Bluegrass State go back to school next week. No kid should be stuck in school in early August! Then again, my position is based on my personal experience and preferences.

We haven’t seen many birds yet, but did enjoy the sight of a juvenile Peregrine Falcon unruffled by a mob of belligerent Blue Jays.
