Migration at the height of the dry season

10,000 Birds

My apologies for the late posting this week. I thought I should press on with this article and catch up, especially as it’s relevant to what’s happening in the bird world in the Iberian Peninsula at the moment. Last Saturday we had some early rains down here in the south, the first in over three months, but not enough to start the green flush.

Dead animals in yard

Reddit Animals

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but this past week I have discovered in total five dead shrew moles and a dead bird in my yard. Two of the shrews and the bird were attacked by something because they had injuries and blood on them, and the other three shrews had no injuries. At first I suspected that it were the stray cats' doing. I've heard stories about cats killing small animals for fun, although I don't know much about them because I've never had a cat myself.

Seven Hectares of Heaven

10,000 Birds

So my birding buddy who is a botany professor lives on his family’s seven hectares (17 acres), a mere ten minutes’ drive from my house. It’s a wonderful piece of property, with a waterway running east-west down the middle. The south-facing slope was once used to grow corn and graze cattle, but now sports three ecological homes, and is beginning a process of reforestation.

Having spent several days on a birding and hiking trip in the Alps, my two buddies and I had two more days remaining. The last segment of our hiking trip (and correspondingly the last post of this mini-series) took us to the Soierngruppe, a relatively free-standing group of mountains forming a circular barrier arround two small picturesque lakes.

Birding the Tomohon area, North Sulawesi

10,000 Birds

Tomohon is a town in North Sulawesi about 30 km south of Manado, the city and airport where birders are most likely to arrive. Given the condition of the roads and the higher elevation (700-1000 meters) compared to Manado, it takes about one hour to get here from Manado.

A Trip to the Jiangsu Coast for Shorebirds and More

10,000 Birds

It is a time-honored tradition among Shanghai-based birders to go to some coastal places two or three hours north of the city to unsuccessfully look for Spoon-billed Sandpipers. This quest was difficult enough a few years ago but has since become more frustrating, as ever more areas are blocked off – not to protect the environment, but rather to encourage lucrative mass tourism.

Bogey birds

10,000 Birds

Most of us have bogey birds – certain species that for one reason or another elude us for years. Forty years ago my bogey was the Bohemian Waxwing, and by 1986 I was sufficiently keen to see one that I was prepared to resort to twitching. I was told of a small flock feeding on a cotoneaster tree in a cul-de-sac in Ipswich, a town 80 miles north of where I lived at the time.

My daughter has chosen to euthanize her husky on Friday. Words of support would be deeply appreciated.

Reddit Animals

She made this agonizing decision because her dog’s epilepsy has only gotten worse over the last four years. He had 13 seizures just last weekend. She has spent thousands of dollars on vet appointments and meds, but the meds haven’t helped. Even her vet, at her last visit 6 days ago agreed that his quality of life is poor, and she actually offered to euthanize the dog right then and there.

Reddit Animals

I could go on forever about them. They are genuinely so fascinating and so beautiful. People comment about how scary they look and sound, I can see where they’re coming from. But these birds aren’t aggressive to people. Quite friendly, actually. Their calls are so unique, and especially how their beaks are the way they make it. They are such intelligent animals.

What to know before getting a rabbit

Reddit Animals

Hello, i wanted to get 2 rabbits for my grandma, as she claimed that since she was a kid she always had this desire of having a rabbit. I had a quick read about what to do, like a rabbit shouldnt be alone, that they should stay on the ground, vets etc etc. My grandma own a dog, a 9 y old labrador, and a cat, a 10 y old cat. They are both very docile, the dog is really sweet and she is good with the cat aswell, just she is very chaotic, she run around a lot and at times is too "invasive"

It’s an older dog so the behavior is not likely to be corrected at this point I assume but I’m just curious, would this behavior be because of how it was
