Pet Parents Spending Billions on Their Dogs and Cats

4 The Love Of Animals

Did you know US dog and cat parents spent more than $52 billion on their pets last year? That’s not all on adorable sweaters and toys. Among the 2012 estimates from the American Pet Products Association, food was by far the largest expense for pet parents. The association expected US pet owners to spend nearly $20.1 billion on food alone—up more than 26% from five years ago.

Bird-Eating Fish

10,000 Birds

Usually, it’s “Bird eating fish” but here we have a case of a “Bird-eating fish.” The Wels Catfish, Silurus glanis , is the second largest fish in its range, which covers much of Europe and parts of West Asia. In parts of Western Europe, it is considered to be “exotic” because it has been introduced, possibly by anglers, in lakes and rivers in France and the Iberian Peninsula.

It’s hard to laugh at a joke when Hitler is involved, but I defy any birder to watch this video without cracking up. Brilliant! (Hat tip to Suzie for the link. The thumbnail photo of a Hoary Redpoll was taken by Clare K. in his big backyard !).

Preserve the Priolo: Azores Bullfinch Fundraiser

10,000 Birds

The Azores Bullfinch ( Pyrrhula murina ), also known as the Priolo or São Miguel Bullfinch , is an understated beauty endemic to the island of São Miguel in the Azores. This bird is also highly endangered, with a known population of just over 1,000 birds. The non-profit Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) does not want to see this bullfinch go the way of the dodo, so it is raising funds to maintain the laurisilva or laurel forest this species requires.

Who knew there was a special day just for dressing up your pet? Obviously the fish and the bird weren’t keen on wearing any clothes, but our dog Baby sure loves it! Especially in the cold winter weather. What about you? Do you dress your pet in clothing?

White-throated Dipper in Switzerland

10,000 Birds

Francois Portmann is a professional photographer with an impressive portfolio. Though originally from Switzerland he now makes New York City his home where I (Corey) have had the great fortune of meeting him, birding with him, and photographing wildlife with him. He gets images that make other photographers want to scream at their inadequacies and we here at 10,000 Birds often link to some of his more amazing galleries.

Where Are You Birding This Third Weekend of January 2013

10,000 Birds

Does anyone out there remember the film The Endless Summer ? This surf classic centers around the idea that one could, with sufficient time and money, follow good surf all over the world. One of my old college roommates — a surfer, obviously — hung the poster for inspiration. I was definitely inspired, but not by the surfing. An endless summer would be truly splendid were it not for the fact that birding can be pretty dull during summer months.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of January 2013)

10,000 Birds

Based on the last two weekends, this year’s weather will probably be as wacky as last year’s. We’ve oscillated in New York from frigid to balmy back towards frostbitten in what feels like a few days. This seems to be confusing some of our reliable winter birds, not to mention our Winter Festival planners. On Friday, I was pleased to string together a three- merganser day, nailing Hooded , Common , and Red-breasted in different spots.

The Predominately Western, Golden-crowned Sparrow

10,000 Birds

At first glance you might not recognize this bird as a Golden-crowned Sparrow ( Zonotrichia atricapilla ). It is an immature bird with an indistinct yellowish forecrown with dark stripes on its crown (click on photos for full sized images). The entire Golden-crowned Sparrow population migrates within North America between winter and summer ranges… arriving in California in September and October, often foraging with White-crowned Sparrows.

A Look Back at 2012

10,000 Birds

Back in January of last year I said in my list for the year that I’d be happy if I hit 300 birds in 2012. My final number for last year was 402 as it turns out. So I guess the question is “am I happy?” Well yes, I guess. But perhaps a better question would be “is that why I am happy?” Last year I saw this Antipodean Albatross.

When times are hard getting out amongst the natural world and birding can come as a great relief. If you’re not just starting out and have already spent the hard-earned cash on your optics then birding can almost be cost-free. In an age when you get ‘nothing for nothing’ (or nowt for nowt as they say round these parts) then birding surely delivers fantastic value for money as an activity you can participate in almost anywhere, anytime at almost zero cost.

The Dove Who Came In From the Cold

10,000 Birds

Not in any espionage sense. Rather, my trip to the American Museum of Natural History last week was enlivened, however slightly, by spotting a Rock Pigeon perched on top of the elephants in the Hall of African Mammals, safely out of the elements and unexposed to Central Park’s hawks. After checking with a docent to make sure that the bird wasn’t a hazard to the collection I watched it for some time – I even tried to take its picture, but the lighting was less than optimal and t
