Waxwings and their kin: Meet the bombycillids

10,000 Birds

Waxwings and their relatives are a small, interesting group of songbirds that have seen some interesting taxonomic changes in the last few years. This group — dubbed the bombycillids , from the waxwing genus and family name — appears to fall near kinglets and a large group containing thrushes and muscicapids (Old World flycatchers and chats) in the passerine tree.

Duck Numbers And Duck Stamp Sales No Longer Correlate

10,000 Birds

The number of people who hunt waterfowl in the US has declined since the mid 1990s. This has resulted in a reduction of the number of duck stamps sold. Sales of duck stamps have funded the preservation of wetlands and other wildlife habitat, which in turn has supported an increase in waterfowl populations. This has benefited both the waterfowl hunters and everyone else who likes ducks and their kin.

Peli Can-Do

10,000 Birds

“The young ones are incredibly curious and playful,” says Monte Merrick, the co-Director of Bird Ally X in Arcata, California, which is almost to the border of Oregon. “The adults don’t say much – minor grunts, mostly bill clacking. But the babies bark like dogs and moo like cows.”. He’s talking about Brown Pelicans. “We always wear safety goggles,” he says.

10,000 Birds

Birding tends to be an extremely freeform activity, demanding only we pursue our bliss to the best of our means and ability. Digiscoping Photo Study of Ring-billed Gulls

10,000 Birds

Parking lot gulls are an easy target for photography. They are confiding, confident verging on cocky, and content to do their thing while you take their picture. And when what you are taking their picture with is a digiscoping rig you can get some pretty interesting pictures. These Ring-billed Gulls were drinking and occasionally taking a half-hearted bath in a big puddle.

Sometimes Birds Can Hold Their Own Against Starlings

10,000 Birds

People get frustrated with European Starlings in North America, they are non native and they can snarf up food quickly at the feeders. One of the ways to deal with them is to offer feed mixes that only have hard shell seeds like black oil sunflower seeds or safflower. Suet can be a challenge though because it’s hard to find a flavor that starlings won’t eat.

Hairy Woodpecker

10,000 Birds

I was rather surprised to find that the 10,000 Clicks section of 10,000 Birds does not have a Hairy Woodpecker gallery. Surely this is a terrible oversight on someone’s part and may I say that the Downy Woodpecker post is also up for grabs. Hairy Woodpecker. I got lucky in Central Park at the end of January as this individual Hairy Woodpecker crossed the path in front of me and settled on a rotted stump close by.

Exploring the Shore and Shorebirds at Crystal Cove State Park

10,000 Birds

Back in December when my family and I were in southern California we planned a day trip out to Crystal Cove State Park in southern Orange County. After all, what better way to take advantage of southern California’s sunshine than to spend some time on the beach? And Crystal Cove is the perfect beach for a birder with family in tow. Rocky shoreline and sandy beaches sit side-by-side and at low tide there are tidal pools in which you can look for Hermit Crabs and other interesting organisms

Pied Avocets in Hong Kong

10,000 Birds

Growing up in Britain gives Pied Avocets something of a air of royalty, birdwise. They are, after all, the symbol of the RSPB, a rare and valuable bird, something to be cherished and protected. The first one I ever saw didn’t live up to this expectation, however. Instead of some attractive East Anglian fen the first Pied Avocet I ever saw was in a ditch in India.

Where Are You Birding This Final Weekend of February 2013

10,000 Birds

I’m glad that February is the shortest month because it also ranks as one of the most boring, at least from a phenological perspective. Very little of natural history interest happened this month, unless you count meteors exploding over Russian skies. On my side of the planet, we’re just counting cardinals… boring! Speaking of boring, I’m bringing my kids down to NYC this weekend, where we will studiously avoid birding because all the fun birds fled after Winter Storm Nem

Sexy Saxony Duck

10,000 Birds

In the realm of waterfowl, not all that are manky are malign. Many domestic Mallards do indeed offend the eye with their mutant messiness, though Muscovies are even worse in that regard. Some domestic duck breeds, however, present new forms of beauty unseen in their wild counterparts. This sexy Saxony hen from the Grantham Canal at West Bridgford, Nottingham, generously shared by Mike Fuller, presents a perfectly pulchritudinous and pale plumage any birdwatcher should be pleased to behold.

Birding around Cossack

10,000 Birds

My feature picture shows the view from the lookout at Cossack that looks across to Jarman Island and the lighthouse is a significant historic landmark. It was in use from 1888 until 1985 and has been lovingly restored. The lighthouse construction is pre-fabricated cast iron and was shipped from England, along with the lens. Cossack was one of the earliest ports in the north of Western Australia and the first settlers arrived in 1863.

112th Congress Most Anti-Environment Ever

10,000 Birds

The League of Conservation Voters released its scorecard on the members of the 112th Congress of the United States and it is a very depressing read. (Link is a PDF.) What is really stark is how horrific Republicans continue to be on the environment. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, supporting Republican candidates means that you are supporting people who apparently hate birds, the environment, and nature.
