“Out West” to most Floridians might mean California or Arizona or might even refer to the Gulf Coast of Florida. But to us locals from the El Dub (Lake Worth, FL) it refers to anywhere east of the Everglades and west of Congress Avenue. And this is where magic happens from time to time. And the magic factories are two neighbors, Green Cay Wetlands and Wakodahatchee Wetlands.

Winter in the temperate portions of the Nearctic ecozone might be cold, but fine birds choose to visit no matter what the weather. I’ve always equated winter with big predatory birds like Snowy Owls and Rough-legged Hawks. But on second thought, smaller birds like Horned Larks and Lapland Longspurs spring to mind. And on third thought are those winsome winter waterfowl and exciting alcids… so what avifauna do you equate with winter in your part of the world?

There are many wonderful things to see at the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival , but the Florida Scrub-Jay is as close to a “must see bird” as you’re likely to find down here. Fortunately for attendees, there are around 60 family groups of the charismatic and affable birds scattered throughout the Brevard County area, and many of the field trips at the festival run across them at various times.

Fandom is a funny thing, isn’t it? We’re headed towards Super Bowl Sunday, when the most popular sporting event in the Western Hemisphere plays out annually. Consequently, football fandom, which is always ardent, has reached a fever pitch. One (or at least this one) wonders why unmitigated obsession with some activities is seen as far more normal or acceptable than a fanatical focus on others.

Back on 14 January Larry and Shari Zirlin were fortunate enough to come across an amazing three Northern Lapwings in a field in New Egypt, New Jersey, while out looking for a pair of reported Sandhill Cranes. I had been wishing I could get to see them but between family and job it just wasn’t working out for me to make the 90-minute ride to New Egypt.

Knowledgeable nature lovers might be wondering why everyone in the Western world seems to be talking about the corvids we’ve always known were the coolest around. But when the Baltimore Ravens are set to play in Super Bowl XLVII, suddenly everyone loves ravens. Well, around here, we’ve always been keen on Corvus corax and his kin, so we invited like-minded (small “r”) ravens fans to explore the many ways of looking at this black bird.

In Western Australia we have two races of the Spinifex Pigeon Geophaps plumifera , but neither are found in Broome. One race lives to the north- Geophaps plumifera plumifera and the other race lives to the south- Geophaps plumifera ferrugines. They both live in rocky areas and amongst what is traditionally called Spinifex grass. The grass grows in large dense clumps and is Triodia, a perennial grass, which has sharp pointed leaves that can easily enter your skin causing irritation and infection.

Black-backed Bush Tanager. Also known as Black-backed Bush Finch is only found in the montane forests of Ecuador and Colombia. The only place where I can see it regularly is the on the eastern side of the Cayambe Coca Reserve. The most accessible place near Quito is the access road to the reserve that begins at the luxurious hot springs of Papallacta.

Phil McGrew is a nuclear engineer turned currency trader. He moved from Florida to California 3 years ago and in the process, gave up flying small planes for photography. “I mistakenly thought it would be a cheaper hobby.” jokes Phil. Now you know why the most numerous and widespread of the two swan species in North America used to be known as the Whistling Swan. The North American Tundra Swan ( Cygnus columbianus columbianus ) migrates in flocks of family groups… leaving their Arctic breeding grounds in late September and arriving in their wintering grounds in November and December 1 (click on photos for full sized images).

This piece follows on from Part One. After a successful morning’s birding and a very fine lunch, Peter and I made our way to our next site, Bang Poo. The site is a small on the coastal edge of Bangkok proper, a park and pier sicking out of mangroves and wetlands. It’s kind of an odd spot, a mix of protected wetland and mangroves mixed with some manicured lawns and parking.
