I and the Bird is Back!

10,000 Birds

The corner of the blogosphere inhabited by nature lovers circa 2005 was, like most frontiers, an unruly place full of empty spaces and opportunity. Birders online, despite our commonalities, had little sense of connection or community. But what we did have was our own blog carnival! The inaugural edition of I and the Bird featured sixteen bird bloggers from around the world, many of whom are still blogging today (right Sharon and Clare ?!

Introduction to Winter Sparrows of South Florida

10,000 Birds

The southeast tip of the Florida peninsula is not well endowed with a wide variety of sparrows in winter like the rest of the southeastern United States. Almost any park, even within large cities such as New Orleans and Atlanta, will host such quintessentially common Nearctic species such as Field , Song , Chipping , and White-throated Sparrow in good numbers.

Virginia is for Birders

10,000 Birds

The Delmarva Peninsula juts southward towards North Carolina like the appendix of the eastern seaboard. It’s southernmost third, given to Virginia by accident of history rather than geopolitical intention, lies apart from the rest of the state both culturally and geographically. It’s connected to the mainland from the south by the Chesapeake Bridge Tunnel, a 17 mile long causeway that transects the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.

24 Hours (or so) in Kuala Lumpur

10,000 Birds

Living in New Zealand is fun and all, don’t get me wrong. Sure, there are no woodpeckers here and very few places you can get a decent donut, and everything is quite a bit more expensive than you think it should be, but I still choose to stay. Every now and then, however, the urge to go home becomes impossible to resist, and the day I’ll have to spend in the air be damned.

Any Luck, Stormbirders?

10,000 Birds

The North American Mid-Atlantic region was, in case you haven’t heard, just hit by Hurricane Sandy, a veritable Frankenstorm that caused billions of dollars in damage and claimed many lives in its rampage through the Caribbean to the Great Lakes. Of course, everyone who is suffering in this time of wicked weather is in our thoughts. But I want to know about the birds!

Hurricane Sandy Birding

10,000 Birds

After a long day at home on Monday with a two-year-old who did not want to spend the entire day inside I was relieved when I woke up on Tuesday morning and conditions seemed calm enough for a search for storm-tossed birds. Hurricane Sandy devastated large swathes of New York City but my immediate neighborhood, Forest Hills in Queens, got off lightly, and I headed on over to Flushing Meadows Corona Park on foot, figuring that if the roads were blocked it was more likely that I could find a way ar

Facebook for the Birds?

10,000 Birds

The new campus Facebook is planning is going to be “an iconic, cutting edge facility,” and have trees planted on the roof in the hopes of providing habitat for migrating songbirds. The architect, Craig Webb, of Gehry Partners LLP, seems to get the issues that often surround birds and buildings. “This is becoming more important in terms of maintaining migratory songbirds in America,” Webb said.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of October 2012)

10,000 Birds

I don’t know how things are in your part of the world, but in my geographic proximity, people are freaking out. Much of the Mid-Atlantic is bracing for what has been endearingly termed a Frankenstorm. No wonder folks are hoarding water and batteries! On the bright side, a big storm tends to blow in bedraggled rarities… This weekend, I was quite pleased to see that Dark-eyed Juncos have returned to my yard.

Wagler’s Pit-viper

10,000 Birds

It is possibly heretical to admit as much on such an ornithologically biased website, but one good snake can often be the highlight of my birding day. I will always take a few moments to check out a likely spot or follow the threat calls of birds in case a snake might be found. I was lucky enough to find a Wagler’s Pit Viper, Tropidolaemus wagleri in Singapore recently and it fair took my breath away.

What Winter Wonders Wait?

10,000 Birds

Just before I left for Italy, I took a trip to the Lee Metcalf Wildlife Refuge for a healthy dose of migration. It was loaded with waterfowl – lots of Mallards and Green-winged Teal , a few Gadwalls and Northern Shovelers , a solitary Pintail and an equally lonesome Eared Grebe , and of course tons of my old favorite the American Coot (or as I like to call them, the Devil’s chickens.

Now I know you are already thinking… what’s this, Clare and Grant have done a quick trip to Cape York, Queensland to top up their year list? These birds are “rare in rainforest clearings and edges and mangroves in north-eastern Queensland south to Cairns” Well, that didn’t happen! Maybe one day, but not this week! Thursday evening we had just returned from a very windy walk along the beach and were sat outside on our back veranda.

Yellow-rumped Warblers in Autumn

10,000 Birds

As passerine migration peters out and thoughts turn to what birds will show up to stay the winter the only wood-warbler left in any numbers at all in the vicinity of my New York City home is the Yellow-rumped “Myrtle” Warbler. They can be found in good flocks wherever there are berries to sustain them and the barrier beaches with their abundance of bayberries are perfect.

Where Are You Birding This First Weekend of November 2012?

10,000 Birds

Happy Day of the Dead! Don’t panic… this is not the first day of the inexplicably-trendy Zombie Apocalypse. El Dia de los Muertos is a splendid Mexican holiday that should be celebrated by remembering friends and family who have died, eating delicious food, and admiring Mexican warblers. I haven’t had much luck spotting rarities at the lakeshore, but am keeping my ears open for new sightings of Evening and Pine Grosbeaks , both of which have been popping up in Western New York.
