As you’ll remember, Kentucky’s Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources unanimously passed its sandhill crane hunting proposal. All eight hunters on the commission think it’s a good idea to shoot cranes in Kentucky. The proposal now goes to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for final approval or denial. The public comment period on the Kentucky sandhill crane hunting proposal ends AUGUST 1 2011.

THE DUTCH parliament has voted overwhelmingly to ban the ritual slaughter of livestock. This could halt production of kosher and halal meat in the Netherlands – and lead to similar campaigns in other European countries.

To the Editor: Re “ Egg Producers and Humane Society Urging Federal Standard on Hen Cages ” (Business Day, July 8): I’m a vegetarian who turned vegan after coming to terms with the fact that just because I was eating hormone-free, antibiotic-free, even free-range organic eggs didn’t mean that egg-producing hens were living a cruelty-free life. When I read your article, I was elated.

I’m not sure what the collective noun for a group of petrels is, but the vets and wildlife carers of New Zealand might be forgiven for thinking that it might be a wreck after this week. Two weeks of strong westerly winds have pushed thousands of Southern Ocean prions onto the land along the entire western coast of New Zealand in the biggest seabird wreck since 1974.

On our lowland birdwatching trip we visited Rio Canande Reserve , Botrosa Road and then we also visited the nearby reserve of Mache Chindul; specifically we went to Bilsa Research Station of Jatunsacha Fundation. Jatunsacha purchased the land it currently protects in 1994 and the government declared it an Ecological Reserve in 1996 due to it large biodiversity and high degree of endemism.

For 13 years now, friends and family have been gathering in an undisclosed corner of Potter County, Pennsylvania during the third weekend of July to create a glorious giant chicken of wood, straw, and gunpowder only to burn it. Since I don’t drive, the vast majority of my birding is self-propelled. Biking and most especially walking tend to accustom a person to a certain pace — a pace that is leisurely and lends itself to reflection and rumination. Such meditative birding is, for me, the heart of the experience. It relieves stress, helps me make decisions, and leaves me feeling refreshed.

Arctic Terns are a rarity in New York State. But Sterna paradisaea can be found pretty much every year at Cupsogue Beach County Park on Long Island in very small numbers and only during the summer. Shai Mitra has already done an excellent job on this blog of explaining the methods that must be employed to find and identify an Arctic Tern visiting Long Island during the summer, and many New Yorkers have since followed his instructions and found their own birds.

During the last week I have been monitoring the 23 kilometre stretch of beach that runs along the west coast of Broome. The tides have been suitable for me to cover most of the beach by bicycle and this enables me to cover most of the area in a day. This is the time of year when the Pied Oystercatchers breed and already three of the sixteen pairs along this stretch of beach have successfully laid eggs.

The American White Pelican ( Pelecanus erythrorhynchos ) is a huge bird! With an 8 to 9 1/2 foot wingspan and weighing in at up to 30 pounds, it rivals the California Condor for size and weight. If it were entirely up to me I likely would have given up my Saturday afternoon this past weekend to go to Daisy’s job’s yearly summer picnic. But I agreed, mostly because of the promise of delicious food and the threats of physical harm. The location of the picnic intrigued me as well. I had never heard of Riverbank State Park but a quick search showed that it is a small park on the Hudson River in Harlem.

Yow! If your weekend was as hot as mine, you’re undoubtedly dragging your weary carcass into this new week. I don’t know what your excuse is, but I spend the weekend under a surprisingly intense sun reveling with a merry mob of friends and family. Yes, details will follow and yes, there were birds. I’ve sought out the birds of certain corners of Potter County, PA for a very long time, but still lucked into a slew of stunners I hadn’t previously seen there.

Sometimes a book just grabs and pulls you in, and The Chimps of Fauna Sanctuary: A True Story of Resilience and Recovery is one of those books! From the moment I started reading to the very end, I could hardly put the book down. I just had to know what was going to happen as the author, Andrew Westoll, worked at this special sanctuary. His storytelling was so wonderful, and of course the subject matter was so interesting, that I really couldn’t wait to pick the book up.

An article in today's Seattle Times about Woodland Park Zoo's attempts over the last 20 years to breed elephants. Very controversial with organizations such as In Defense of Animals, PETA and the Northwest Animal Rights Network. They say it's cruel. The zoo claims it's to preserve the species.

I was looking out a car window the other day and noticed that of all the wildlife most of it was bird. I’m sure there were a lot of insects in range of my eyeballs, hiding behind leaves or camouflaged against bark as insects are wont to do. A squirrel skittered by … a squirrel is not a bird. But it happened at that moment that a lot of what I was looking at was avian in nature: a few crows, some sparrows, blackbirds, and other run of the mill inner-ring suburb fliers and flitterers.

Back when we used to run the 10,000 Birds ID Clinic (as opposed to just answering lots of e-mails about bird identification!), we received an inquiry about a bird “about the size of a small duck, much bigger than a jay… a crest similar to a jay or a roadrunner and it has a remarkably long neck.&# The querent included many other details about location, coloration, and what not but once I heard about that neck, one bird sprung immediately to mind… Green Heron !

A couple of weeks ago I posted a series of pictures of what I called “ Ratty Summer Gulls &# – gulls that are just plain ugly, especially when compared to, say, breeding plumage birds. All of the pictures were taken on a single trip to Jones Beach in June. The coolest bird of the bunch, a tattered bird that had mostly white plumage, I left unidentified.
