Beginning a Birding Blog

10,000 Birds

'So you want to dip your feet into the murky, highly questionable waters of the Birdosphere eh? Well, although I am hard at work being the leading world birder, I’ve somehow had the time to become an old hand at this blogging stuff as well. Among the things that more and more birders have mentioned to me over the years is their urge to start their own birding blog, but they just don’t know how to go about it.

The Summer Solstice Safari

10,000 Birds

'It is mid-day of the mid-summer day in the Balkans. And it is hot. My wheels are rolling down the dirt track in the Carska Bara Ramsar site, through the meadows and arable fields interspersed with depressions filled with water and overgrown with reeds. A small flock of European Bee-eaters is in flight around their nesting hillock and on the hillock – stands a pair of adult White-tailed Eagles !

Where Are You Birding This Final Weekend of June 2014?

10,000 Birds

'Keep your eyes to the skies for hunting falcons ! Is it that time already, when a young birder’s fancy turns to, um, non-birds ? Indeed, those long hot stretches between migratory periods can try a bird watcher’s soul as surely as a cold, dark, birdless winter. Fortunately, once you get tired of your local residents, you can expand your interest in nature towards everything else that blooms and bustles in summer.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Fourth of June 2014)

10,000 Birds

'The solstice serves as a sunny reminder of the mutable nature of our days. Some of us enjoyed our year’s longest stretch of daylight this weekend, while others endured their longest night. To paraphrase an insightful innuendo, it’s not the length of the day but how you spend it. I hope you spent your solstice well. I enjoyed all manner of early summer entertainment and look to the Barn Swallow s that bombed us as we picked strawberries and soared daringly along the lakeshore as my B

Impala Jousting

10,000 Birds

'The Impala is an slim, elegant antelope which is seen over most of sub-Saharan Africa, wherever there are a few Acacia bushes or some grass. Young males are turned out of the maternal herds once they reach an age at which they begin to compete with the dominant male. They form bachelor herds where they test their strength against their peers, finding their natural place in the hierarchy.

Birding Argentina – Costanera Sur in Buenos Aires

10,000 Birds

'After our first leg of this birding trip we took a couple of days to visit Buenos Aires and to soak-in some of the local culture; BA is a beautiful city and our stay was very memorable. Costanera Sur was an old riverside resort which was restored to and Ecological Reserve back in the 1970. Today it is a protected reserve in the middle of the city just east of Puerto Madero which also was an old port build in the late 1800s and is now restored into a 21 st century waterfront project.

Common Tern Chick Getting Fed at Nickerson Beach

10,000 Birds

'Nickerson Beach is an amazing place to visit when the breeding birds are back. Though it is an active beach at which people fish, swim, and otherwise recreate, it also hosts an impressive array of beach-nesting birds that are readily accessible though protected. It is a mecca for nature photographers and weekend mornings during the season often see a score or more photographers taking advantage of the early morning light (and that by getting there before 8 AM you can avoid the $30 entrance fee)

Sepilok: Worth a Second Look

10,000 Birds

'I got Sepilok wrong. I’m big enough to admit that. In fact, I suspect a lot of birders do, based on the reading I did before I went to Borneo. To a lot of people its a brief stop between the endemic-fest that is Mt Kinabalu and the river action of Kinabatangan. To plenty others it is a beuatifully accessible patch of lowland rainforest, the perfect location to pick up a host of lowland birds.

4 The Love Of Animals

'NEW JERSEY – Animal shelters are full, they have no space, they often have no money, and they have a small amount of dedicated volunteers. Animals in the tri-state area are euthanized daily, rescue groups are unable to save as many lives as they wish, and animals spend years in boarding kennels while awaiting adopters to fall in love with them.

'Birding in Israel? Report your sightings to help build an eBird-like database of the country’s avifauna. New studies find that: when birds migrate from the Arctic to South America, fragments of mosses, fungi, and other “diaspores” hitch a ride (and a similar phenomenon may have spread acacia trees from Hawaii to an island in the Indian Ocean); caterpillars which feed on many different types of plants are more attractive meals for birds than caterpillars which subsist on only one or two specie

Birding Otford to Helensburgh

10,000 Birds

'Well, we have returned from our trip to a cold Broome! Although we are still experiencing 30c/86f in the day we have had an overnight temperature of 8c/46f and that is just to all let you know that the tropical north of Australia does have its cold moments and we do sometimes need a layer or two on! We have been used to wearing an extra layer or three over the past three weeks as we had our holiday in the Southern Highlands.
