'Sadly, we don’t exactly live in an ideal world. If we did, all of our jobs would have in-house pet daycares and we could bring our four-legged friends to work with us. In the less accommodating world we actually live in, our pets have to stay at home while we spend the next 8 to 10 hours making the money that we’ll later use to spoil them.

'A wildlife rehabilitator friend, newly licensed, recently called to ask if he could feed a recovering Turkey Vulture anything besides defrosted rodents. Well! Did I have an answer for him. Normally I feed vultures, as well as hawks and owls, defrosted mice and rats. Sometimes a defrosted chick. Occasionally I’ll give one a defrosted quail, which I have to order for the accipiters and peregrines who can be annoyingly picky; but quail are expensive, so I don’t do it often.

'Once again Pied Oystercatcher breeding season is fast approaching in Broome and we can expect the first batch of eggs to be laid within the next few weeks. We have monitored a 23 kilometre section of beach in Broome for several years now and have discovered that they are not as site faithful or as monogamous as you read in text books. We have also discovered that they are very rarely successful with the first eggs laid due to predation of either the eggs or the chicks.

'Summer, the season that we in the Northern Hemisphere are currently enjoying or suffering depending on your latitude and state of mind, is a time when birds often take a backseat to other diversions. But we naturalists notice them no matter what we’re doing. Aren’t we lucky? The birds I admired most this weekend were Barn Swallows swooping over strawberry fields.

'What is better than a bluebird ( Western in this case) against a blue sky? April showers bring May flowers. June showers bring mosquitoes and regret. I hope you’re not dealing with rain this weekend! I’ll be admiring whatever birds choose to fly over the final weekend of the Rochester International Jazz Festival, definitely one of the best events of the year around here.

'There are a couple of YouTube clips out there that seem to show birds feeding fish–just like people. What’s really going on is that the birds have hard dry food that they need to moisten in order to eat it. The surrounding fish have figured this out and begin a feeding frenzy around the feeding station. I recently had the opportunity to spend time and Paris and thought it might be fun to do some birding there.

'The one thing I really wanted to do on this most recent trip to southern California was visit Santa Cruz Island again. The last time I was out there was in January of 2008 and Daisy and I had really enjoyed both the boat ride and the island itself. This time, more than five years later, we were not only going in summer rather than winter but we also had our three-year-old son, Desmond, with us.

'The mountains of southern California are a necessary escape from the heat, smog, and suburbia that can plague the denizens of places like Orange County and Los Angeles. Mount Baldy, more properly though less popularly known as Mount San Antonio, is no exception. The highest point in Los Angeles County, at 10,068 feet (3,069 meters), it is a refuge in all seasons, considering the ski area carved out of its eastern flank, which is actually in San Bernardino County.

'There’s often a trick to getting a location; you can’t just go to a location and low and behold… birds! With large parks it’s often knowing the spot to go inside the park as well as the timing. Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park , in northern Sydney, is not yet a park that I can say I fully get yet. It’s a huge park with some cracking birds, but while I’ve seen some great birds I haven’t managed to have an outstanding day there yet.

'The Red-browed Finch , Neochima temporalis, is a small, sociable finch of eastern Australia with a north/south divide between two accepted races. This flock was found in long grass at the edge of a small wood near Sydney. The summer is past in the southern hemisphere and the mornings have become cooler. They sunned themselves and preened in the early sunshine before starting to feed from grass seedheads.
