The Dry Tortugas – off the Bucket-list

10,000 Birds

Birding the Dry Tortugas in late April has always been high on my bucket-list of the best birding experiences in North America. Now before any of you think that I must be really old or dying to have a bucket-list I must assure you that before April 9th 2012 I was still in my thirties. That means I used to be very young. Almost infantile. Now I’m just young.

Indigo Boys

10,000 Birds

One of the most exciting aspects of bird migration in a coastal location is the potential for large numbers of birds to find themselves over the ocean when dawn breaks. They get to land as quickly as they can and sometimes can be found concentrated in large numbers. This isn’t fallout in the strictest sense, which generally is taken to mean when birds are driven down out of the sky by storms, but simply a migration phenomenon that, despite what it means for the birds that don’t reach

“Birds of Passage” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

10,000 Birds

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was the most popular American poet during the nineteenth century though as the years have passed his star has dimmed in comparison to other poets of the period. Many see his work as derivative of the European poets, unoriginal, and suitable only for children. His most famous work today is probably “Paul Revere’s Ride” though other poems, including “The Courtship of Miles Standish,” “The Song of Hiawatha,” and “Evangeline&

A close encounter with a Wedge-tailed Eagle

10,000 Birds

On Wednesday this week we had a very close encounter with a Wedge-tailed Eagle on the edge of the road. The Blue-tongued Lizard that was also having the same experience was definitely not as excited and was trying its hardest to protect itself. It all looked rather hopeless as it tried to make itself look fatter and wider & arched its back & forced a sound out.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of April 2012)

10,000 Birds

April didn’t deliver many of its vaunted showers in my area this year. I’d fear for May flowers if so many weren’t already in bloom. How is the season in your corner of the world? My best bird this weekend has to be the Hermit Thrush that’s been hanging around my backyard for the last week. We’re wondering if it plans to nest here, but I can’t imagine such a shy (compared to robins!

What It Feels Like For a Ferret Watcher

10,000 Birds

As lovely as the Sage Grouse were, our trip had another primary mission — to see the amazing, highly endangered black-footed ferret. Here’s a little sketch of what it’s like out there searching for one of North America’s rarest mammals: She looks like a cross between a Loch Ness Monster/kitten hybrid — a blunt fuzzy head, with small round ears and shining eyes in a black mask, atop a serpentine body equipped with an elongated neck and stubby little dark legs.

Golden-winged Warbler at Crocheron Park, Queens

10,000 Birds

This will be a quick and happy tale. I was at work in New Jersey. An email went out over the listservs that Eric Miller had found a Golden-winged Warbler at Crocheron Park in Queens. I got out of a work a bit early and drove to Crocheron Park. After about a forty-minute vigil the bird showed. Whoo-hoo! These after-work, good wood-warblers in Queens could get habit-forming.

May Migration in Queens

10,000 Birds

Queens, New York, May 2009 May is the month of migration in North America. Sure, some species move earlier and, of course, in the fall everything turns around and goes the other way, but May stands out as the month when birds that haven’t been seen since the previous fall come back in natty new breeding plumage and blow birders’ minds again the same way they did the previous spring (and the spring before that and the spring before that and so on and so forth).

State law allows 6 dead ducks per day. Badeaux, who claims to never have violated hunting laws before this incident, faces up to six months in jail and a fine of $15,000.

Birding Flushing Airport

10,000 Birds

Queens, New York, May 2010 At one time there was an airport in northern Queens called Flushing Airport. It was shut down in 1984 due to frequent flooding, a fatal plane crash in 1977, and the growth of LaGuardia Airport. The land has since started to return to something approaching a wild state. Unfortunately, developers are hungrily eying the 70-acre parcel despite some local opposition and the fact that it is a wetland that provides excellent habitat to a variety of birds (to say nothing of

Dragonflies and Damselflies of the East: A Field Guide Review

10,000 Birds

We now interrupt all talk about birds and migration to consider dragonflies. And damselflies. Together they comprise Ondonata, an order of insects that, like birds, are beautiful in flight and challenging in identification. Unlike birds, they do not vocalize; unlike butterflies, they are totally predatory, not a vegetarian amongst them. When I was a kid, I thought the large darners that patrolled my camp lake would bite me (and, it turns out I was not totally wrong, some large dragonflies can ni
