Bearing witness to the cyclical fluctuations of the seasons is a boon to the psyche on a level that tends to go unnoticed and unannounced. We typically celebrate sightings and not a change in air temperature or moisture content. Here in the tropics, our seasons do not exhibit such extreme variations as higher latitudes (in either direction) do. There are no sudden swings in temperature of 20 or 30 degrees – but there are subtleties to be appreciated by the keen observer.

I did not prepare properly when I went to the Galápagos. Reading over my email from that period, I can’t believe I ended up there at all–I was working on a chaotic project at work, the economy was in crisis (well, the economy is always in crisis, but this was the summer of 2011, as in Black Monday crisis), and the tour itself was not confirmed till two months before the start date.

Nonggang is a rural place in Guangxi with a nice landscape somewhat reminiscent of coastal Northern Vietnam (well, it is not too far away). One of the reasons for birders to come here is to see the Nonggang Babbler. The Nonggang Babbler ‘s claim to fame is having only been discovered in 2008 (as a meaningless reference, it should be added that the first iPhone was released in 2007, one year earlier).
