Frank Gilbert’s Awesome Hospital Cage

10,000 Birds

'One summer my father came to visit from his home in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. He is the handiest of handy guys; he has fixed my lighting, the plumbing, wired my entire house so the flip of a switch would make it come alive with music, and, one Christmas, showed my son how to install a major stereo system in his 1996 Jeep Cherokee (which elevated them both to hero status at the local high school).

2014-2015 Winter Finch Forecast

10,000 Birds

'Ron Pittaway has published his winter finch forecast for the winter of 2014-2015. Though Ron is based in Ontario his reports are eagerly anticipated by birders across the northeastern United States and eastern Canada because it takes into account a vast array of data to figure out which irruptive species might show up where. Below is a slightly elided version which removes some of the Ontario-specific information and leaves just the meat of the forecast.

Bald Eagle Catching and Eating a Blue-winged Teal

10,000 Birds

'Back in January, when I was enjoying my attendance at the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival down in Florida, I had an enchanting encounter with our national bird , the Bald Eagle. The setting was the Viera Wetlands, a marvelous location that uses the ultimate waste product, sewage, and turns its processing into an incredibly rich wetland environment chock full of a variety of birds, an environment that is also greatly appreciated by a host of birders, photographers, and general nature l

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of September 2014)

10,000 Birds

'James Russell Lowell famously wondered , “And what is so rare as a day in June? Then, if ever, come perfect days…” Of course, he was on the mark concerning the quality of June days, but don’t you think he might have overlooked September? Corey and I were most pleased to see that shorebirds haven’t entirely abandoned the Esat Pond at Jamaica Bay.

Barred Owl

10,000 Birds

'What is it about Owls that casts such a spell over folk? If there is one order of birds that is guaranteed to draw involuntary gasps and odd keening noises, it is the Strigiformes. A recent experience left me upside-down in a drift of pine needles as finding myself face-to-face with a Barred Owl was such a shock that I lost the power of standing. Alert calls from a small patch of woodland at Tyson’s Corner, VA, near Washington DC, prompted me to take a look and see what was upsetting the

Marlow Lagoon

10,000 Birds

'While we have been living in Palmerston in the Northern Territory I do miss our garden at home in Broome and all of our daily visiting birds. However I am able to visit Marlow Lagoon in town regularly and cycle there most days to observe the changing bird-life as the different trees flower. There is a huge variety of bird-life and by visiting at different times of day I have found over 65 species, with the highlight so far being the Black Bittern that I wrote of last week.

Eye Level with a Whiskered Treeswift

10,000 Birds

'Treeswifts are funny little things. They’re swifts, only they aren’t, actually. When they were first described they were thought to be a link between the swallows and the swifts. Of course this is nonsense, and they are clearly close to swifts, but with a hind toe that lets them perch like a swallow, they sit outside the family as well, in their own, rarely thought about, family.

Review: The Opticron Traveller BGA Mg

10,000 Birds

'Every birder wants the best optics possible. But what that means often depends on circumstance. I love my Swarovski EL 8x32s deeply, but sometimes they might be inconvenient, ostentatious, or just too bulky for the occasion. I was given the opportunity to review Opticron’s Traveller binoculars just in advance of such an occasion – a wedding in Lake Placid, not the kind of event you want to show up to with a pair of bins strapped around your neck or a giant bag weighing you down.

Where Are You Birding This Final Weekend of September 2014?

10,000 Birds

'Late September affords birders in the Northern Hemispheres some of our most glorious weekends. That plenty of birds are in the midst of migration certainly doesn’t hurt! I’m entertaining non-naturalists this weekend, so I’ll only be catching birds on the fly (see what I did there?) Corey always makes time to find nifty NYC birds, so look for him around town.

The Complicated Mating Systems of Rheas

10,000 Birds

'Mating systems and parental care patterns can be odd among birds. Male-female role reversal, happens in some familiar birds, but is rare. Less than 1% of all species exhibit role some type of role reversal where males do what females typically do. Male Phalaropes, Jacanas, Tinamous, and Rheas build nests, incubate the eggs and take care of the chicks.
