Rooiels – Funny Name, Serious Birding

10,000 Birds

I don’t think I’ve ever done a post on my home patch of Cape Town, South Africa. This place is such an epic birding location that one cannot possibly do the city and its surrounds justice in one post. So I’m going to feature one of my very favorite locations, just 45 minutes drive from the city centre. The little seaside village of Rooiels is famed for being a wonderful location to pick up some choice South African endemics but it is also one of the most beautiful spots in the

Toronto Zoo's Remaining Elephants to Go to Sanctuary

This is excellent news. Not only is Toronto closing its elephant exhibit, but the City Council voted to send the remaining elderly elephants to the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) sanctuary instead of another zoo. Yay!

Why Don’t I Have Any Finches At My Feeder?

10,000 Birds

When trying to attract finches, it can be feast or famine. Some days you get bunches and bunches, other times you might feel totally rejected by them. I recently had a conversation with a colleague who works for the Department of Natural Resources. He’s a smart guy, a wildlife biologist and what he knows about native swans is incredible, but what he knew or didn’t know about bird feeding was surprising.

Birding John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge

10,000 Birds

John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge , AKA Tinicum, is an outstanding urban oasis in southern Philadelphia, less than one mile from Philadelphia’s airport. Being a New Yorker, I had never birded the refuge before. After all, why would I drive over two hours to bird in habitat that is very similar to much closer locations? But when the Focus on Diversity: Changing the Face of American Birding conference was held there last weekend it seemed like a welcome excuse to finally check out this

Patch: An Urban Red-tailed Hawk (1 of 4)

10,000 Birds

I was pretty new to watching birds and photography when I first met this Red-tailed Hawk. While keeping track of some hummingbirds in Alta Plaza Park in San Francisco, I noticed a shadow slipping over the terraced hillside. When I looked up the hawk was five feet above my head and powering towards a perch high in the trees. It was actively hunting the grassy slopes and barely paid me any attention as I tried to figure out how to get as close as possible without changing its behavior.

Kakariki or Red-crowned Parakeets

Just a quick one this week as life is crazy and rattles relentlessly onwards. Since everyone loves parrots, I thought I’d post some pictures of one of New Zealand’s many interesting species. The Red-crowned Parakeet is one of three species known also as Kakariki - literally small kaka. One of the small parrots in the Cyanoramphus radiation, the species was recently split from insular forms on New Caledonia, Norfolk Island and Antipodes Island.

By a glorious upward instinct drawn

10,000 Birds

For with a lark’s heart he doth tower, By a glorious upward instinct drawn; No bee nestles deeper in the flower Than he in the bursting rose of dawn. -From “The Falcon” by James Russell Lowell If one were to combine the word “bird” with the word “superlative” the result would be the Peregrine Falcon. Though fastest is the first to mind, most fearsome, most awe-inspiring, and coolest all apply as well to Falco peregrinus.

American Robins Eating Hawthorn Berries

10,000 Birds

When I digiscoped the European Starlings feeding on hawthorn berries last week I also turned my digiscoping rig towards the horde of American Robins that were frequenting the same hawthorn shrub. They were struggling to stay balanced on thin branches in strong wind while scarfing down berries like they were the tastiest thing they had ever eaten. It was fun to watch and photograph and I spent quite a bit of time with the birds in the nice late afternoon light snapping shot after shot after shot.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of October 2011)

Happy Halloween! See how I assume you celebrate Halloween no matter where in the world you live? Must be the way you’re dressed… The best bird of my weekend was Tufted Titmouse , which has become more prominent here as we approach winter. I forgot how much bigger these birds are than the other species like chickadees they pal around with.

Snipe and not Snipe

Long Valley is an intensively farmed area at the confluence of two rivers in the former British ‘New Territories’ of Hong Kong. It is divided into small plots, mostly less than 50m 2 where the use of large machines is impractical and human labour is the main method of cultivation. It is highly irrigated and many of the crops, such as taro, watercress, rice and lotus flower, require that the plots are permanently flooded.

Buff-bellied Pipit Anthus rubescens

10,000 Birds

The Buff-bellied Pipit * Anthus rubescens , which is known in the Americas as the American Pipit , is a bland little bird, and one of those species that are only known and noticed by birders. If you mention to a random person that you saw a pipit without providing any other context the most likely response would be a blank stare (though some will probably think a pipit is some kind of apple).

Are Americans Too Dumb To Be Birders?

Well, we did elect George W Bush at least once, so it is a hypotheses worth testing, I suppose. Witherspoon in Trouble for Python Purse

Critter News

For some bizarre reason (hopefully just ignorance), Reese Witherspoon has pissed off animal rights activists by purchasing and carrying around a purse made out of python skin. Python skinning is horrible, brutal and repulsive. And it's illegal for her to have it at least in the State of California. And she paid $4,000 for it. Sorry, but that's stupid enough on its own. $4,000 for a frigging purse?!

For some it is birds, and these can be great pets – while parrots will squawk at you, others are quiet, beautiful companions.
