Big Years in 2013

10,000 Birds

On a Big Year, every species counts equally, even the lowly House Sparrow. Last year saw quite a few big year records fall to dedicated birders. There are, of course, more big years happening this year. What records will fall in 2013? The following is not an exhaustive list, of course, but hopefully we will learn of more big years in the comments. Periodically throughout 2013 we will check in with the folks we find doing big years to see how they are doing.

Sundaygrams: Holiday break

4 The Love Of Animals

As much as we love the holiday season, it’s also kind of nice when it’s over and the hustle and bustle settles down. Of course, we loved our little break from normal life: Sometimes the wrapping is more fun than the actual gift! Or at least, Baby the Maltese thinks so. It’s been very cold (in the negatives), so Baby often wonders why she has to go outside for her business.

Four More Grosbeaks?

10,000 Birds

I was intrigued to read this piece over at the ABA Blog. One the one hand, science is awesome. On the other hand, it was hard enough for me to find one set of Evening Grosbeaks ! What’s a birder to think? I guess it’s strange that I didn’t get all this hashed out in my mind when it was happening to Red Crossbills , but I’m still not sure that Crossbills are even real to begin with or if they’re a big joke everyone is playing on me.

Sani Pass – a Drakensberg birding gem

10,000 Birds

“In 80 birding tours to more than 100 countries, that was definitely the best day of birding I have ever had in my life!’ This unequivocal statement was recently made to me by a well traveled American birder after a day trip up Sani Pass. What a way to sum up what is undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest birding sites and certainly my favorite in southern Africa.

Vive la France!

10,000 Birds

A search of more than 20 years. For a fleeting glimpse. Just to be fooled again. And again. Then… …on December 30th 2012, at Les-Baux-de-Provence in France, I finally nailed that little sucker. The famous south-facing cliff below the castle ruins. Famous for this one: The WALLCREEPER ! Vive la France!

CBCer for Hire

10,000 Birds

It’s one of the subtle joys of doing Christmas Bird Counts to be assigned the same area over and over again over the years. To be able to have a profound understanding of a particular patch of ground, to personally witness the changes brought over time. When I was a young birder in Missouri, my home-town CBC saw me return again and again – with my dad and a core group of other local birders – to the same part of the count circle.

Where Are You Birding This Second Weekend of January 2013

10,000 Birds

How many of you are already used to writing 2013 for the year? I usually need until the end of February to feel certain about the date. I may also need until then to come up with a clever intro to this post, but we can’t wait that long… I’ll be kicking off my weekend with some early Friday birding with Corey followed by a train back to Rochester for my weekend proper.

Brown-headed Gull

10,000 Birds

At the time this post goes live I’ll be wandering around Hong Hong in a bemused state of mind trying to identify not only the native birds but the multitude of other species released by the inhabitants into the area. It’ll allow me to put a good start to this year’s list before the long drought of work starts up. So allow me to introduce the Brown-headed Gull.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of 2013)

10,000 Birds

One weekend does not dictate the tempo of a year, but it never hurts to get a year off on the right foot. How did that work out for you this weekend? Are you looking forward to more like it or hoping for better? I’ve spent most of my weekend beating my head against this blog (in a metaphorical sense of course.) At least I could enjoy Northern Cardinals peeking through my window!

My Year in Birding 2012

10,000 Birds

Two-thousand-twelve was a pretty darn good year for me birding-wise and otherwise. Seeing 525 species was nice, as was the fact that I birded in four countries, nine of the fifty states in the United States, and fifty-one counties. I had some goals for this year as well, goals which I laid out in the introduction to my 2012 year list. This year my goals are simple.

IATB Needs More Jays

Hey! You! The blogger sitting on a post about Blue Jay s hoarding acorns or Scrub Jay s putzing around in family groups. You with the photos of gorgeous Green Jay s or unusual Unicolored Jay s or enigmatic Eurasian Jay s (see what I was doing there?). Why haven’t you submitted your stuff to I and the Bird yet? Haven’t you heard the subject is “Jays”?

My Big Day in Miami-Dade

10,000 Birds

For January 1st, 2013, I decided to do something a little different this year — a Big Day in Miami-Dade, which involves seeing or hearing as many species as possible within a 24-hour period inside my home county. The past record holder for Miami-Dade, my good birding friend Roberto “Toe” Torres, admitted that, as far as he knew, his not entirely serious effort of 102 species was the highest number of species recorded for the county in 24 hours.

The tremendous Rhinoceros Hornbill

10,000 Birds

Most readers of this blog will certainly appreciate an out-of-season tropical post at the beginning of January, a post based on what was almost my best bird of the year 2012 – if it wasn’t for the Bearded Vulture I saw a bit later. When I arrived at my survey site on Borneo, South Kalimantan, in April 2012, I had high hopes but little expectations of finding hornbills.

The Reflected Challenge

10,000 Birds

A couple of days in San Francisco over the New Year caused me to reflect on how much information we actually need to identify a bird. Corey’s devilish warbler quizzes have shown that some people, given the tiniest amount of detail, are capable of superhuman feats of recognition. The air was so still at times this week that the reflections were almost perfect, but just a tiny ripple or bubble on the surface of the water causes enough distortion to make identification more of a challenge.

Clare M’s 2013 Year List

10,000 Birds

I really enjoyed the challenge of listing my birds during the last year and although we have kept lists in the past we have never noted the first date each year that we see a bird, so that was a very interesting exercise. Every now and again we would look at our list for a bird that we should have seen, but hadn’t and therefore go looking for it.
