Urban birding in La Paz, Mexico

10,000 Birds

There is little doubt in my mind, that the topic of urban birding has been well covered on this and every other birding site. Despite that, I have it in my head to jot down a few of the interesting things about birding here in La Paz, Mexico. What is it that makes this area different from any other urban setting, which might play host to a nice selection of migrant and non-migrant species?

Birding: Time and Effort

10,000 Birds

How much time do you devote to birding? Are you happy with an occasional morning here and there or do you need more? How high is birding on your list of activities – is it the very first or merely one of? These are the types I recognise: Coffee Break Birding – 10-15 minutes, usually not planned ahead but squeezed out of your schedule. E.g. you have a meeting next to a park or a lake, so you come a bit earlier to see whatever may be there.

Twitching a Gray Kingbird in New York

10,000 Birds

Gray Kingbirds are rarely seen in New York State and when they are they usually are only seen by the person or people who find them or those in the immediate vicinity. They don’t tend to stick to a spot and allow themselves to be seen by the hordes of birders who like chasing state-level rarities. That made the Gray Kingbird that was found way up in Livingston County on Monday, 2 May, such an intriguing bird.

The Return of the Nesting Skimmers and Terns

10,000 Birds

They have returned! Last week I drove over the Navarre Beach Causeway, peering carefully to either side as I slowed to 20 mph. For the last few months the sloping sides of the bridge met the water with no birds dotting its sand other than a few pigeons or gulls. In one big wave the Black Skimmers and Least Terns arrived on the Panhandle, filling the skies with their unique calls and patrolling the bays and Gulf of Mexico for prey.

Between celebrating mothers and chasing migrants, most of you probably enjoyed a busy and fulfilling weekend. We can’t wait to hear about it! Corey was hoping that Gray Kingbird –in New York State–would be his Best Bird of the Weekend but sometimes long-distance twitches result in dips. Instead, he was pleased to see unexpected Great Horned Owls on both Saturday and Sunday, the latter being pursued by a raucous mob of Blue Jays.

Pallid Cuckoo

10,000 Birds

Two weekends ago we went away for a bush camping trip and the weather was perfect! Hot days around 40c/104f, but the nights were getting cooler at long last (below 30c/86f) and our Wet Season had come and gone and offered very little rain whatsoever. Roll on to this weekend and we have almost had more rain in the last few days than we have seen for the rest of the year and we are now in our Dry Season!

Combined Beats’ list

April was a good month for the list with a couple of our big–hitters weighing in to boost the numbers and The Management engaged in a beat recruitment drive in a cynical attempt to swell the catalogue. During last month, beat lists have been shared from Mexico, Australia, Nigeria, Costa Rica, Russia, UK, Canada and USA. As at May 7th, the total stands at 1661 with the main thrust of the migration still to come.
