October Global Big Day in Costa Rica- an eBird Trip Report

Global Big Day has become an annual collective event in May that encourages thousands of people to watch birds on the same date. As far as promoting birding goes, the only thing better might be October Gobal Big Day !

After two and a half years of being unable to bird anywhere other than Michoacán, Mexico, I was really looking forward to our current Old World tour. Surely a change of continents was just what my 10,000 Birds writing “career” needed. Lots of new sites, in new countries!

Birding Hluhluwe, South Africa

Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park is the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa – it was established in 1895. It is thus much older than the Hold Steady song “ Heavy Covenant “, which was only released in 2021. The quality is similar though (on a highly abstract level).

What’s Up with the ABA? — Proposed Changes to Bylaws

The American Birding Association has a relatively new Executive Director ( Nikki Belmonte ) and changes are coming. One proposal is modernizing the Bylaws, which govern the structure and operation of the ABA. Most of the proposed changes are sensible, but, as described below, one is troubling.

Low level crossing at Fitzroy Crossing

Whenever we visit Geikie Gorge we make a detour to visit the Low level crossing at Fitzroy Crossing if the weather permits. Having observed the beautiful Purple-crowned Fairy-wrens in Geikie Gorge we hoped to add another bird species to our 2022 year list.
