Bucket Mouth, Chuck-will’s-widow

10,000 Birds

I’ve been learning to band birds at the South Florida Bird Observatory. Nothing like a little bit of mist-net extracting to make you feel like an absolute beginner! But hands-on bird experience has been a major gap in my knowledge to date and I’m astounded at how much more I’m discovering about birds. For example, last Sunday we found an unusually large bird in one of the nets.

The Joy of Letting Go

10,000 Birds

It is fall migration season and the birds are flying. We have had quite a run of birds overhead as they stream down along the Pacific flyway. I’ve been banding birds of prey for 5 years it is easy to put ourselves through endless fog days and cramped quarters when the end result is good research, accurate data, and minimal impact on the raptors we encounter.

Kettling Broad-winged Hawks

10,000 Birds

It is that time of year when a birder must keep at least one eye on the skies for migrating raptors. They make their way south in big numbers, especially on days when the winds are right, which generally from the north, though they do tend to pile up very nicely at many hawkwatch sites in the northeastern United States when the winds are out of the northwest.

The Winter of our Discontent

10,000 Birds

It’s snowing back home. That’s not unusual this time of the year, nor is it guaranteed that this will be the snow that stays. But it is likely. And I’m a long ways from home, at the opposite end of the world’s fifth largest island, some 1200 kilometres away. I’m missing my family and that probably doesn’t leave me in the best frame of mind to write.

Where Are You Birding This Final Weekend of September 2012?

10,000 Birds

September has been flush with weekends this year, but all good months must come to an end. But worry not… regardless of weather conditions, this month goes out like a lion when it comes to birds on the move! This weekend, I’ll continue searching for local fall migrants, hopefully not in vain. Corey told me where he’d be birding this weekend, but I already forgot; apparently, his plans aren’t that exciting.

Lazy like a Koala

10,000 Birds

Due to the fact that we will still be camping and birding when this goes online I thought I could share some photos of a well-known marsupial in the southern parts of Australia. We spent two months in Portland, Victoria in late 2009 with Grant’s work and whenever we could we were birding. It was challenging in tall trees, but what was surprising to us were the number of Koalas that we came across as we looked up.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Fourth of September 2012)

10,000 Birds

Phenology is a funny thing (a funny word too, which is neither here nor there.) Every wildlife watcher, no matter how specialized, becomes attuned over time to the ebb and flow of each local plant and animal’s life cycle. With enough observation and experience, we notice slight variations and how those aberrations sometimes ripple throughout ecosystems.

Another Diabolical Wood-Warbler Identification Quiz

10,000 Birds

Though we just recently had a diabolical quiz regarding wood-warblers I thought is was time that we had another. Like the last one, this will involve pictures of wood-warblers seen in New York and New Jersey over the last couple of weeks. I think the level of diabolicalness might be a bit less then that of the last one but, as I always say, I am a lousy judge of such things.

Parrotlets Name Their Babies

10,000 Birds

Parrots in the wild are always awesome, but parrotlets hold a special place in many hearts, including mine. Here’s something else to love about these petite pocket parrots: Grrlscientist reports that Green-rumped Parrotlets name their babies. Cool, right? And I suspect the population studied is this group studied by Nick Sly back in 2008.

Black Solitare-Entomodestes coracinus-in Ecuador

10,000 Birds

Another great reason to visit the 23 de Junio besides the Long-wattled Umbrellabird is the Black Solitare ( Entomodestes coracinus ). This bird, of the Turdus family, can be found on the western slopes of Ecuador and Colombia. Due to its large distribution area, its current conservation status is listed as least concern, but its population numbers are considered to be decreasing due to its habitat destruction.

International Bird Rescue Believes “Every Bird Matters”

10,000 Birds

In January 1971, two oil tankers collided under the Golden Gate Bridge, spilling more than 800,000 gallons of crude oil into the San Francisco Bay. Little was known about oiled bird care at that time and despite the courageous attempts of hundreds of volunteers, only 300 birds survived from the 7,000 collected. Alice Berkner , a registered nurse, came up with the concept of International Bird Rescue while trying to help the more than 7,000 birds that filled warehouses around the San Francisco Ba

You Can Go Home Again

10,000 Birds

I spent the bulk of this past weekend in upstate New York for the simple reason that my dad just underwent quadruple bypass surgery and was recovering in hospital. Because the hospital, St. Peter’s, is in Albany, 140 miles north of my current home in Queens, I had the opportunity to both stop in and see my dad on Saturday and Sunday and bird some places I haven’t had the chance to visit since I moved to New York City.
