On SPECIESISM, by Joan Dunayer

Animal Person

I finally read SPECIESISM , by Joan Dunayer, which was published a couple of years after ANIMAL EQUALITY , which I wrote about a couple of weeks ago. This book has so many great quotes that I'm going to have to write a couple of posts about them. Off we go (and all of the below are exact quotes). Whenever the media report that someone has killed "an endangered animal" or "an endangered species," they too confuse an individual with a species.

Missouri Legislature Attacks Horse Activist

Critter News

Now this is just juvenile. Missouri is going to vote on allowing horse slaughterhouses back into the State. An activist organized an appeal in which people from around the country and the world could contact the legislators in opposition to the bill. This is very common and occurs to local, state and federal representatives. People will often send communications to representatives for areas in which they don't live.

From Today's New York Times

Animal Ethics

To the Editor: Re “ Animal Abuse as Clue to Additional Cruelties ” (news article, March 18): As someone who deals with dozens of cruelty-to-animals cases every week, I applaud states that are imposing stricter penalties on people who hurt animals and that are working to establish online registries of animal abusers. Animal abusers are cowards who take their issues out on “easy victims”—and their targets often include their fellow humans.

SPECIESISM, by Joan Dunayer, Part Deux

Animal Person

I realize that in writing about "old speciesism" I failed to define this term that Dunayer uses. I think of "old speciesism" as analogous to racism and sexism in that it is exploitation based on species. The advocacy component of old speciesism isn't the campaign to end that exploitation, however. Instead, it is the campaign to modify it. Meanwhile, "new speciesism" is the notion that within a paradigm where rights are included for nonhuman animals, some are more deserving of rights than others

New Film About Bullfighting Stars Adrian Brody

Critter News

Too bad. I really liked Adrian Brody, but here he is showing up in a movie about a Spanish bullfighter. To the film's credit, though, it did spend a lot of money to avoid using real bulls. Tags: spain entertainment bullfighting.

Another Critical Article Directed at CITES

Critter News

The CITES irresponsible treatment of marine animals made it to Huffington Post too. This article is by the President of the Blue Frontier Campaign. I'm glad others share my disgust with CITES and the UN. Hopefully, regular citizens will read this and not just other activists. (I forwarded an article about this to my book club members. Knowing them, I bet they were hoping for fish and chips instead!).

From the AP. The government's proposals are aimed at tackling the growing problem of aggressive canines being used to harass, attack and even kill. Very interesting, and surprising, story about why veterinarians in Britain appear to be four times as likely as the general public to commit suicide. The article summarizes the results of a research paper by a PhD student in mental health. While the research paper deals specifically with British veterinarians, there are apparently elevated suicide rates in this profession in other countries as well.

Christian Science Monitor Calls for Endangered Species Hour

Critter News

"Earth Hour" was held yesterday. People were supposed to turn their lights off for an hour. I like this opinion piece from the Christian Science Monitor which calls for an "Endangered Species Hour." It's in response to the pathetic CITES conference which basically screwed marine animal protection. The Christian Science Monitor rightly points out that citizens and consumers need to get involved in endangered species protection, because at the CITES level, it's all about money and international po
