Thank a lemming

10,000 Birds

Many of you in the south are enjoying great sightings of Snowy Owls ( Bubo scandiacus ) this winter. Most provinces and most northern states have had sightings, and the irruption has extended as far south as Oklahoma (so far). Everywhere on Facebook I see friends and acquaintance posting photos of Snowy Owls , and or status updates on how they’ve succeeded or failed in their search for reported birds.

4 The Love Of Animals

Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay welcomed a new baby female reticulated giraffe on Tuesday, December 27, 2011. At 5 foot, 7 inches tall and weighing approximately 127 pounds! That’s a big baby! The calf is the daughter of father, Jafari and mother, Tesa, who has previously given birth to four other calves at Busch Gardens. The breeding program has been a great success.

The Great Climate Hoax

Animal Ethics

Suppose, for the sake of argument, that the globe is warming. What follows, as a normative matter? Nothing. As David Hume (1711-1776) pointed out long ago, you can't validly deduce an evaluative proposition from a set of factual propositions. (Put differently, there has to be at least one evaluative premise in order for there to be an evaluative conclusion.

Mountain Bluebird in New York

10,000 Birds

What is there to say about a Mountain Bluebird , a bird of the west, of high elevation grasslands, of the Rocky Mountains, in New York State? What is there to say, that is, other than “Wow” as you head out the door to track it down? First found on Monday by Lenore Swenson and Diane Teta while it was feeding along a fence line in Suffolk County, on eastern Long Island, the bird was found again on Tuesday, so I made a pre-work chase after it on Wednesday morning.

The Amazing Birds of Bryant Park

10,000 Birds

There is no need for me to go into detail about past birding experiences at Bryant Park. Regular readers of 10,000 Birds will recall a host of cooperative wood-warblers, an absurdly obliging woodcock, and many more good birds over the last several years. But even the annals of Bryant Park bird sightings, if such annals exist, have no record of a winter like this one in Bryant Park.

Where Did The Birds Go?

10,000 Birds

I received a press release last week amidst all the Christmas Bird Counts stating that 3000 fewer birds were observed during the Christmas Bird Count in Central Park, NY and I thought the headline was a bit alarmist, but then again that’s what the headline on a press release is supposed to do to get your attention. Here’s a quote: “Audubon’s Birds & Climate Change data proved birds are not Climate Skeptics, but already voted on this issue decades ago with their wings, man

I had an idea to write a post about the American Robin this week and checked the archives at 10,000 Birds to see how repetitious that might prove to be. There are plenty of articles, here for example, or here , but the one that caught my attention was from Sharon who passed on an observation from a friend who had seen what they took to be an American Robin actively fishing.

Cuckoo for Congo

10,000 Birds

Back in August we linked to an article about cuckoos that had GPS transmitters attached to them in England and how they had taken widely divergent paths to get to Africa. Funny story about that – though they did take widely divergent paths they have come back together : Three of the birds, Chris, Martin and Kasper, flew down through Italy and straight across the Sahara desert.

Mr. Smith’s Longspur

10,000 Birds

Gideon B. Smith of Baltimore, Maryland, was not really a birder. Nor was he an ornithologist. He was into silkworms, and made much of his money as one of the first Americans to import the little caterpillars with the cocoons made of money into the United States. So it’s probably ironic that his name is applied to such a range-restricted and cryptic species, a true birder’s bird.

Throw in the completely different climate we are experiencing in northern Australia and we seem to be absolutely worlds apart… but are we?! It’s not snowing-it’s not even raining yet and it’s the Wet Season, but we do have mistletoe for the Christmas season!

Hiking Black Dome Mountain, or, Epic Dip

10,000 Birds

On 22 December a birder named David Rankin was hiking in the Catskill mountains of upstate New York when a fellow hiker asked him what the bird that just flew off the trail was. Fortunately David had a camera because it seems unlikely that anyone would have believed his report of a Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch , a bird that is very rarely found east of the Rocky Mountains, if he hadn’t managed to get a few pictures.

Pigeon Feeding Ban Proposed in Clark County, Nevada
