Aussan Natural Cleaners Giveaway

4 The Love Of Animals

Our pets spend most of their lives on the floor. They sleep there, play there, and even eat there. Is it any wonder we should be concerned with the products we use to clean the floors in our home? Not to mention all the other surfaces and places we share with our pets! It has been very important to us to find products that both work well, but that are safe for use around our pets.

The Domestic Turkey and the First Thanksgiving

10,000 Birds

This is the time of year that we rightfully contemplate the noble Turkey. The very first thing we notice about this large member of the Galliformes is that there is a wild version and a domestic version, and although the two are rather different, they are both given the same species name, Meleagris gallopavo. This is not entirely unknown among domestic animals, but many domesticates have no living wild version.

A recent proposal ( 555 ) to the AOU’s South American Classification Committee deals with newly published information about relationships within the sandpiper family, Scolopacidae, and what it means for the classification of these wonderful, fascinating birds. I think it’s likely that next year’s AOU North American checklist supplement will reflect some of the new information.

Close Encounter With A Northern Saw-whet Owl

10,000 Birds

I was on a rather lackluster birding outing in Kissena Corridor Park in Queens when I heard Blue Jays mobbing something. They were distant so it took me awhile to get to them and when I got close it quickly became apparent that they had something good because it wasn’t just Blue Jays but Northern Cardinals , Black-capped Chickadees , and a Hermit Thrush all riled up and harassing something in the lower branches of some small trees.

Surfing and Birding

10,000 Birds

Ok, so just to prove that you can do birding anywhere and anyhow, check this out. Two of my favorite pastimes are birding and surfing. Even though I’m probably more accomplished at other pursuits – like table-tennis! – these are my mistresses. These are the two things I like to do more than anything else. When I tell my wife I’m going to the post-office and grocery store , I’m more than likely going for a surf.

Red Crossbills at Jones Beach State Park, Long Island, New York

10,000 Birds

Red Crossbills are the more difficult of the two North American crossbills to find. At least, that is what anecdotal evidence tells me and nothing is more accurate than anecdotal evidence, right? Right. But, as was predicted , this has been a monster year for winter finches and good old Loxia curvirostra is no exception. They irrupted early this year but few were found along the coast of New York until the last week and then this weekend it seems like the floodgates opened up with birds reporte

New Zealand’s Other Eagle

10,000 Birds

While New Zealand is famous for its endemic oddities, once upon a time New Zealand also had many birds from groups and families that are no longer found here. There were once two species of goose, a merganser, and a pair of raven species. More curious was the owlet-nightjar, an already obscure group to begin with, but made all the more astonishing by virtue of its flightless and ground living lifestyle.

Juvenile White-winged Crossbill in Montauk, Long Island

10,000 Birds

Even though this winter has been amazing for irrupting finches it is still not every day that a New Yorker gets to see White-winged Crossbills. And I had never, before a run out to Montauk on the far eastern end of Long Island, seen a juvenile crossbill. But this young female and an adult male were more than willing to hang out and try to get into some pine cones while we (being me, Isaac Grant, and Gene Herskovics) watched and digiscoped.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of November 2012)

For most folks I know, the weekend we just enjoyed is the last normal one of the calendar year. From now until early January, your life may be frantic and festive, so I hope you relaxed this weekend! Despite getting out and about, I found the world around me to be abnormally bereft of birds. At least Blue Jays came by to brighten my day. Corey is abnormally pleased to say that Cave Swallow at Jones Beach State Park was his Best Bird of the Weekend, though a big bunch of Red Crossbills is a clo

Well, that first edition of the new and improved I and the Bird went pretty well, didn’t it? Are we all ready for the next one? Good! Because this time, instead of focusing on a much beloved little feeder denizen, we’re going to go straight to the dark side. To that group of birds that has been unfairly vilified for both its reportedly insatiable appetite for gamefish, but also its dour appearance and dark countenance such that the great taxonomists of old stuck them with a name t

Little Curlew in a local park

10,000 Birds

The Little Curlew Numenius minutus is a medium sized shorebird and the smallest curlew to visit Australia. It is usually present in the Broome area from mid-September, but this varies from year to year. They often appear at the ephemeral lakes and also on the school ovals-sports fields. You are more likely to see large flocks of them on open plains than single birds, but they are an unpredictable bird at best and extremely little is known about the population that visits Australia each year.

What do you get a bird-lover who has everything?

10,000 Birds

I looked over at the calendar the other day and literally almost jumped halfway across the room. The end of 2012 – and the holidays – are coming fast. Y to the ikes. On the plus side, it’s almost time for the Audubon Christmas Bird Count, and by all accounts, it’s shaping up to be a very finchy winter across much of North America. But on the other hand, there was so much more I wanted to do in 2012 … and wow, I really need to start buying gifts for my family and friends.
