I'm constantly asked about the details of Baby Sky's life. Where does she get her protein? How are her bones going to grow without cow's milk? You mean she's never eaten bacon? Are you a communist? At Baby Sky's 15 month checkup she landed at about the 75th percentile for height and weight. She comes from small stock, so I do see that decreasing a bit.

I may have to buy a smartphone : For more than a year, Berres (and his graduate students, of course) have been testing and improving the fruit of that inspiration: WeBIRD, the Wisconsin Electronic Bird Identification Resource Database. As animal lovers, we sometimes go to extremes to not only pamper our pets, but to make life with our four-legged friends more enjoyable and healthier for everyone. We try to feed our pets the best food possible not only because we want them to be healthy, but to avoid high vet bills or the need for petmeds. Luckily for us, we also have some 21st-century devices available to us that can make caring for our beloved pets a lot easier.

Luisa Elena Betencourt is an artist with a MFA from Washington State University which she got through the Fulbright program in 1992. She contacted Corey to ask permission to use a Masked Trogon image from the blog for an art show and Corey agreed provided she would write a post for 10,000 Birds about how she is inspired by birds and nature. Luisa is currently preparing a show that will open on 10 February 2011 at Agora Gallery in Chelsea, New York.

The Tennessee Warbler is a poster child for the boreal forests of Canada and the far northern United States. Its population actually fluctuates in response to the availability of Spruce Budworm and though it nests on the ground it is entirely inseparable from the forests of the north during breeding season. As autumn arrives and the days get shorter and cooler Tennessee Warblers make their way south to Central America and northern South America, sometimes as far south as Ecuador.

You should know by now that there are a good number of birds that spend an appreciable amount of time underwater. There are, for example, the Penguins and Diving Ducks. Black-necked Stilt ( Himantopus mexicanus ) photos by Larry Jordan Click on photos for full sized images. This female Black-necked Stilt ( Himantopus mexicanus ) is distinguished from the male by her paler brownish back and scapulars. The male of the species has the upper portion of the head, back of neck, back and wings all glossy black. He also has longer legs than the female.

I’ve long felt that birders, as a group, should have a greater appreciation for the book as a physical object – all those years of choosing field guides that have high-quality color prints and will hold up to rough use ought to lead in that direction. Looking at a book like Barn Owl by David Chandler, it’s not hard to feel that appreciation even if you’ve never given the matter much thought before.

New Zealand has turned many of its offshore islands into introduced-predator-free sanctuaries for native wildlife but Stoats , also known as Ermine or Short-Tailed Weasel , which were originally introduced to New Zealand to combat the introduced rabbit population, recently showed up on two different offshore islands, one of which was over five kilometers offshore.

Do you know what I love about October? Pumpkins! Everywhere you look in the United States around this time of year, giant orange squashes are just loafing around, killing time until their inevitable trip to the mulch pile on November 1. Pumpkins feature in some pretty tasty dishes, but once I discovered how much better sweet potato pie tastes than pumpkin pie, I’ve preferred these curcurbits for their festive fall attitude.

Everyone that visits Broome heads for Cable Beach at some stage of their visit. Many people choose to stay at a hotel within walking distance and enjoy the sun setting into the sea each evening. Camel rides are a popular sunset activity for those who want a slow walk!
