New Year’s Day Birding at San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary

10,000 Birds

On New Year’s Day 2016, our last day in California before heading back to New York, I was pleased for the chance to get out for a few hours in the morning to jump start the year list. The best place I could come up with that was within a short drive of my in-laws’ place in Yorba Linda was the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in nearby Irvine, only a quick twenty-minute drive away.

What is the State Bird of Nevada?

10,000 Birds

I’m one of those people who thinks all birds are beautiful, from the drab House Sparrow to the pink Roseate Spoonbill. Yet, there is one bird that looks like a piece of fallen sky as it zips around eating summer insects, one bird whose blue color is so perfect that birders and non-birders alike can’t help but stare. The Mountain Bluebird is one of the most striking birds in the United States, and is the state bird of both Nevada and Idaho.

Northern Hawk Owl in Germany

10,000 Birds

Few things can spell out “winter birding” as poetically as the sighting of a rare northern owl that has more or less unexpectedly found its way to southern, more balmy environs. That, at least, is the case for most birders in North America, unless they reside in Florida and have no clue as to what a winter is anyway. A “winter owl” however has little meaning to German birders for two simple reasons (and male smew aren’t one of them).

Clare M’s 2016 Year List

10,000 Birds

Well, another New Year crept up on us once again and once again I will commit to listing on the website! This all started way back in 2012 and several of us continued on in 2013 , 2014 and 2015. Just looking at everyone’s lists over the years you can see how varied our birding lives can be. My lists have only covered one continent, Australia, so the numbers have remained quite similar from year to year.

Where Are You Birding This Third Weekend of January 2016?

10,000 Birds

Martin Luther King Jr. lives in our memories as a heroic American who risked and ultimately gave his life to inspire change and advance civil rights. He would undoubtedly be both proud and appalled at the state of society today, but likely wouldn’t care much about the holiday we celebrate in his honor. But for many birders, MLK Day offers an extra day to chase birds.
