A Dozen Quick and Easy Hummingbirds in Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

When the birding slows down, someone usually lets out the excuse that our hobby wouldn’t be as fun if there was no challenge. There’s everything right about positive thinking but if I was forced to choose between easy looks at lots of stunning birds in an hour or a few sub-standard glimpses at birds over the course of an entire day, I’m hanging with the stunners.

What’s in a Name: Attwater’s Prairie Chicken

10,000 Birds

Henry Philemon Attwater was born in Brighton, England and spent his early adult years in Canada, but the state of Texas – which he first visited at 30 and made his permanent home at 35 – has embraced him. A sometimes beekeeper and failed museum proprietor, devoted to collecting and preparing natural history specimens, the Texas State Historical Association recognizes him chiefly for his contributions to conservation.

Greenport Harbor Brewing Company Black Duck Porter

10,000 Birds

Having grown up in Suffolk County on Long Island, New York, I made the reasonable assumption that the Black Duck Porter made by Greenport Harbor Brewing Company was named for the American Black Duck , a locally common dabbler found throughout the East End’s many bays and saltmarshes. With its appropriately birding name and label, I thought this beer would make an ideal subject for my inaugural post here on the new 10,000 Birds “Birds and Booze” beat.

Arizona in Summer: It Ain’t All Hummers

10,000 Birds

It’s a well-known fact that southeast Arizona in summer is awesome. At least for birders. My first birding trip ever was to Arizona. I signed up because it was in summer, the only time of year I could then take a vacation; I was a beginning birder, right at the beginning of beginning, and I didn’t know enough to look at a Plain-capped Starthroat (thank you again, Megan, for forcing me to look) or why I was almost run over by the birders in my group when Common Black Hawk was called out.

Apostlebirds in the Northern Territory

10,000 Birds

Apostlebirds- Struthidea cinerea have an isolated population in the Northern Territory which is quite separate from the population that runs down the east coast of Australia and can readily be seen in the town of Katherine and further afield. Apostlebirds have several nick-names and they are all well-suited to the species and the antics they get up to.

Some of Great Britain’s most cherished seabirds just got an added layer of protection. White-eyed Vireos in Florida’s Econfina River State Park

10,000 Birds

It was a hot and sunny Labor Day along Florida’s Gulf Coast, and my husband Brian and I were heading home from a friends and family weekend on the Suwannee River, stopping at state parks along the road-trip home. My camera bag, stuffed with extra lenses and binoculars, is practically a third appendage at this point, and I was ready to check out avian life at Econfina River State Park.

Returning home, reunions, smoke and birds!

10,000 Birds

Thomas Wolfe wrote an interesting story back in 1940, called “You can never go home again” While I am no writer, and have not penned any stories about my home town, there certainly was some trepidation in my return last week for my 40th High School Class reunion. Lakeview Oregon is located in central Oregon, just north of the California border, and is the highest altitude city in the state.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of September 2017)

10,000 Birds

This is it, people… your last chance, at least in the United States, to wear white without committing a social faux pas. What’s that? Oh right, good birders don’t wear white. Carry on… Despite the autumnal chill afflicting my part of the country, I got out onto the Brickyard Trail in Brighton, a surprisingly reliable site for Marsh Wrens.

Welcome Our New Beat Writer, Tristan Lowery

10,000 Birds

If there is one thing better than a nice cold beer after a long day of spring migration I don’t know what it is. A mojito while birding in the tropics is often refreshing and a nice glass of red wine after a Christmas Bird Count is a great way to unwind. Birders know the wonderful combination that birds and booze is which is why Birdchick has long been a proponent of Birds and Beers and in Maine there are even dedicated trips called “ Birds on Tap !

Opportunistic Herons Catching Fish

10,000 Birds

I spent a bunch of time this weekend visiting birding spots in far southeastern Queens, along the coast and adjacent to Nassau County. One of the places I’ve really enjoyed birding and digiscoping at is Bridge Creek, a newly-minted eBird hotspot. I learned about the location because it is in my turf for the Queens County Christmas Bird Count and is a good location to find wintering Greater Yellowlegs and Belted Kingfishers.
