Trolling for Cuckoos in Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

I watch birds pretty much all the time. This may come as a surprise to folks who keep their birding casual, or who limit their watching to a backyard feeder. It will probably be all too familiar to peeps who arise before a cold dawn so they can trudge through some muddy marsh, or who spend well earned bucks to do similar comfort challenging behavior in lands very far from home.

A Dozen Quick and Easy Hummingbirds in Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

When the birding slows down, someone usually lets out the excuse that our hobby wouldn’t be as fun if there was no challenge. There’s everything right about positive thinking but if I was forced to choose between easy looks at lots of stunning birds in an hour or a few sub-standard glimpses at birds over the course of an entire day, I’m hanging with the stunners.

Welcome Our New Beat Writer, Tristan Lowery

10,000 Birds

If there is one thing better than a nice cold beer after a long day of spring migration I don’t know what it is. A mojito while birding in the tropics is often refreshing and a nice glass of red wine after a Christmas Bird Count is a great way to unwind. Birders know the wonderful combination that birds and booze is which is why Birdchick has long been a proponent of Birds and Beers and in Maine there are even dedicated trips called “ Birds on Tap !

Diabolical Fall of 2017 Wood-Warbler Quiz

10,000 Birds

It is autumn, the time of year when wood-warblers are allegedly at their most difficult. But that isn’t tough enough for 10,000 Birds readers: no, we have to make things a bit more, shall we say, diabolical? Yes, that’s right, it is time once again for a diabolical identification quiz on 10,000 Birds! The only clues you get on this quiz are that all three images were taken in Queens in the last two weeks and all three pictures are of wood-warblers.

Birding the Equilux.

10,000 Birds

It is essential that, once learned, any new word should be used immediately in a showy manner to make one look smart. Thus, I give you the Equilux. We all know about the Equinox, the astronomical term to note the time when the Sun crosses the Equator in its seasonal meanderings. Fool that I am, I assumed that equal night would automatically mean equal day too.

Goanna Creek Rest Area

10,000 Birds

Driving along the Carpentaria Highway from the Amungee Rest Area where we had stopped for lunch and enjoyed the company of well over one hundred Apostlebirds we reached the Goanna Creek Rest Area. It was approximately 128 kilometres/80 miles and the road was in fairly good condition with sections of it being single lane bitumen and very little traffic.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Fourth of September 2017)

10,000 Birds

Some of us had long weekends and made them count. Some of us had short weekends or none at all and still made them count. No matter how much time you can spare, you MUST respond to the spectacle of migration taking place right now. Though it is still September and not really proper sparrow season yet, Corey still managed to turn up a nice Lincoln’s Sparrow at Kissena Corridor Park on Sunday morning, his first of the fall.

Where Are You Birding This Third Weekend of September 2017?

10,000 Birds

Fall migration may want for some of the kaleidoscope colors adorning spring birds, but this time of year offers some of the most exciting birding you can ask for. If, that is, you get out and enjoy it! Some interesting avifauna has been popping up in the Rochester area, and I aim to track a few birds down this weekend. Corey becomes such a whirlwind of bird watching during migration that you could practically see him anywhere, although your odds are best around Queens.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of September 2017)

10,000 Birds

Anyone lucky enough to be high and dry these days can surely appreciate how many birds are on the move. Keep your bins handy, because you never know what you’ll see out there. I was thrilled this weekend to see a bird I haven’t encountered in nearly a decade; maybe American Pipit is common in your parts, but I had to scour the East Spit of Braddock Bay to luck into one.

About gulls and panic

10,000 Birds

Do you ever feel that you do not know your birds anymore? I had that feeling today. Usually I do not start gulling before late October, but finding myself cut off from most of my local patches , I went gulling today, probably my earliest beginning of the gulling season at Ada Huja promenade , along the Danube inside Belgrade – ever. There were the usual 2,500 large gulls.

What’s in a Name: Attwater’s Prairie Chicken

Henry Philemon Attwater was born in Brighton, England and spent his early adult years in Canada, but the state of Texas – which he first visited at 30 and made his permanent home at 35 – has embraced him. A sometimes beekeeper and failed museum proprietor, devoted to collecting and preparing natural history specimens, the Texas State Historical Association recognizes him chiefly for his contributions to conservation.

Greenport Harbor Brewing Company Black Duck Porter

10,000 Birds

Having grown up in Suffolk County on Long Island, New York, I made the reasonable assumption that the Black Duck Porter made by Greenport Harbor Brewing Company was named for the American Black Duck , a locally common dabbler found throughout the East End’s many bays and saltmarshes. With its appropriately birding name and label, I thought this beer would make an ideal subject for my inaugural post here on the new 10,000 Birds “Birds and Booze” beat.

Shorebirds in Action: An introduction to waders and their behaviour, by Richard Chandler

10,000 Birds

Hi, my name is Dragan and I do not know my shorebirds. If I were to give a speech at the shorebirds conference, those would have been my opening words. Anything else would be a lie. Not that I haven’t had an opportunity to learn them. 18 years ago I moved to Botswana where that gloriously bright sunshine makes observing them easier, while shorebirds themselves ease things further by mostly sporting their wintering plumage.

Evil Twin Brewing Falco India Pale Ale

10,000 Birds

If there’s a “ trash bird ” in the world of craft beer, it’s unquestionably IPA. Like starlings and pigeons, these flamboyantly hopped beers are everywhere, aggressively crowding out more modest offerings in taprooms and in the beer aisle, and always leaving a bitter aftertaste, whether you want it or not. These days, it seems that every brewery makes at least one, if not several IPAs, foisted on the market in every imaginable form and permutation of hops, sometimes in the latest attempt to out-

Birding the Sittee River

10,000 Birds

While in Belize back in August one of the outings we signed up for was a boat ride along the Sittee River, a mangrove-lined and placid river that flows into the Caribbean just south of Hopkins. We met our guide in the late afternoon and took the short golf cart ride to the marina where he dropped us off on a dock and went to get the boat. (He’s returning for us in said boat in the photo up top.).

Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge

Growing up in central Oregon, allowed me to experience such a diverse amount of habitat, and the wildlife that resides there. It is a high desert, with sagebrush flats, surrounded by Ponderosa Pines, yet we still have large waterways, for waterfowl and shorebirds. Many refuges in this part of the state, like Malheur refuge, Summer Lake Refuge, and Tule lake Refuge all get the lion’s share of acclaim, and publicity, and deservedly so.

Opportunistic Herons Catching Fish

I spent a bunch of time this weekend visiting birding spots in far southeastern Queens, along the coast and adjacent to Nassau County. One of the places I’ve really enjoyed birding and digiscoping at is Bridge Creek, a newly-minted eBird hotspot. I learned about the location because it is in my turf for the Queens County Christmas Bird Count and is a good location to find wintering Greater Yellowlegs and Belted Kingfishers.

Water Feature Visitors

10,000 Birds

We have a small water feature off our back porch. It’s probably about 300 square feet in size, holding maybe 2000 gallons of water. In addition to nest boxes around the property and bird feeders in the yard, the water feature is our most efficient wildlife magnet. Birds, in particular, can’t resist running water. Even though Eurasian Collared-Doves have encroached on my property, I still enjoy the company of Mourning Doves ( Zenaida macroura ).

A visit to Dog Lake

10,000 Birds

On the final leg of my “Old Home Week”, I travel out to Dog Lake, a pristine high mountain lake, surrounded by mature Ponderosa Pines. Located about 20 miles from Lakeview, Oregon, and sitting at an elevation of 5100 feet, this 208 acre lake is home to many species of fish, including Largemouth Bass, Crappie and Bluegill. With shore side access limited to the northern end of the lake, that protection allows for a large population of water based birds.

Birding Before Hurricane Irma

I was lucky. Living so far west in the Panhandle, projections of Hurricane Irma’s path never crossed near Pensacola. Though we could breath a sigh of relief outside the famous “cone of uncertainty,” it has been heartbreaking to watch the devastation wrought in South Florida, the flooding up and down the eastern seaboard and Gulf Coast, and now Maria’s wrath in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

Endangered Birds: 50th Anniversary for the Class of 1967

Before the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA), there was the Endangered Species Preservation Act of 1966. The first list of U.S. endangered species was issued on March 11, 1967, under the earlier law, and those listings were ultimately grandfathered into the ESA. (Here’s the notice in the Federal Register.). The “ Class of 1967 ” includes 36 species of birds, and they range from those delisted due to recovery to those lost to extinction.

Arizona in Summer: It Ain’t All Hummers

10,000 Birds

It’s a well-known fact that southeast Arizona in summer is awesome. At least for birders. My first birding trip ever was to Arizona. I signed up because it was in summer, the only time of year I could then take a vacation; I was a beginning birder, right at the beginning of beginning, and I didn’t know enough to look at a Plain-capped Starthroat (thank you again, Megan, for forcing me to look) or why I was almost run over by the birders in my group when Common Black Hawk was called out.

Apostlebirds- Struthidea cinerea have an isolated population in the Northern Territory which is quite separate from the population that runs down the east coast of Australia and can readily be seen in the town of Katherine and further afield. Greater Sand Plover with abnormal colouration returns from migration

Galapagos Birds in Costa Rica

The Galapagos Islands? Costa Rica? How can a remote archipelago made famous for Darwin, a bunch of finches, and other cool endemic birds be related to the land of quetzals and “gallo pinto” (that would be the local version of rice and beans)? Although Cocos Island is halfway between Costa Rica and the Galapagos, we are still talking about hundreds of kilometers of ocean between us and the place of the big tortoises.
