What sets birding apart: No one cheats, “because that would be cheating yourself,” he says. Media is funny thing, and I was misconstrued a bit.

'Since November 30, a total of 15 penguin chicks have hatched at Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin, the all-new attraction which features a colony of more than 250 penguins from four species – king, Adelie, gentoo and rockhopper. From left to right, the king chick hatched on November 30, the Adelie on December 21, the Gentoo on December 16 and the rockhopper on December 20.

'I’ve only seen Tigerfish (Alestidae, genus Hydrocynus , usually Hydrocynus goliath ) in two contexts, but I’ve seen a lot of them. One is on the plate, as dinner. The other is in the form of a fossil excavated from a paleontological site. You probably have to go to a resturant in Botswana or South Africa to find Tigerfish on the menu. To find them on certain ancient sites all you have to do is wet-screen enough sediment through fine mesh.

'First, Australia gave us surfing swans. Now, the latest aquatic antics come courtesy of Emus. Clare tipped us off to this nugget: a mob of Emu wading into the waters of the Monkey Mia preserve. (Photo above by Katie Hughes/Monkey Mia Wildsights through ABC Rural). These birds definitely have the right idea, as temperatures Down Under last week soared above 40 degrees Celsius (that’s over 100 degrees Farenheit, for the non-metric among us), postponing some Australian Open matches.
