Best Bird of the Weekend (Fourth of October 2015)

Well, it’s official… no MLB team named for a bird is going to the World Series. The Blue Jays gave their all, but we now need to turn our avian-inspired athletic interest to the NFL, where at least a couple of football teams with bird totems are worth watching! Without anything extraordinary on my weekend bird list, my favorite sighting was a pair of Hermit Thrushes , half hardy enough to hang around when so many other birds have left town.

The One and Only Outer Banks Big Day

5:15 am is never easy to see, but I rolled out of bed regardless. My friend Paul Taillie and I had to meet an intrepid bunch of birders for the inaugural Outer Banks Big Day field trip at the Wings Over Water festival in eastern North Carolina. Last week I told you of the amazing birding at Ellendale dam and you may have noticed I shared a lot of colourful birds, but only mentioned the huge variety of honeyeaters that were present.
