Birding Shanghai in May 2023 – Part 1

10,000 Birds

May is a busy month for birds migrating through Shanghai – and of course, last May was completely missed due to the lockdown. So, I spent a lot of time birding this month, and to keep this post at a manageable length, it mostly only covers the first half of May. It starts with a bird I last saw (and wrote about) in December last year, the Grey-headed Canary Flycatcher.

Baby squirrel question

Reddit Animals

Despite the presence of a dog, a grey squirrel decided our yard was the place to dig a hole and apparently create a burrow. I did not know that type of squirrel burrowed like that - I thought they made nests in trees! Today the dog started digging at the hole in the ground. We called him off but a young squirrel appears to have been displaced. The dog chased it before we realized and now this young squirrel is hunkered down in the corner of the yard.
