Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. At one point, standing in the middle of one of the first dikes, I was able to spot 17 Bald Eagles , a Peregrine Falcon , two American Kestrels , and Northern Harrier. The last weekend of January found me in the frosty Pacific Northwest, meeting some long over due work and family obligations.

I always undertake a number of short timed surveys for the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust’s Big Farmland Bird Count in February, and though the counts didn’t add anything to the year list, they were memorable for finding big flocks of finches and buntings, while a daylight-hunting Barn Owl was a pleasing sight. When I resumed birding on my own in my late 20s in Queens, I always looked forward to seeing the several pairs of Ospreys nesting at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, a sight made all the more welcome after I learned of their drastic decline in the 1950s and ’60s due to the use of the insecticide DDT, followed by a remarkable population recovery.

I was lucky enough to get off work early the other day and thought I would head out toward Battle Creek Wildlife Area and try to get some better photos of the Harlan’s Red-tailed Hawk I’ve seen on Dersch Road. My eye followed this young eagle as it circled its way to the ground, just over a small rise and out of sight.

A young Bald Eagle , our second of the day, preceded us onto the pond but the first good birds we spotted on the actual pond were a quartet of Northern Pintails that conveniently flew right past us. The place was lousy with Swainson’s Hawks , and we may even have spotted a distant Golden Eagle.

Welcome Swallows , Tree Martins and a Wedge-tailed Eagle soared above and we also had Crested Pigeons , which indicated there must be some water present somewhere nearby. Not only did it fly in but it attacked a Bald Eagle! The Bald Eagle was flying upside-down with talons up trying to ward off the small white falcon! ’ My father, who never labeled himself as a birdwatcher, was not only very observant of wildlife but also very good at identification.

Whistling Kites, Black Kites, Australian Hobby, Brown Falcon, Black-breasted Buzzard, Nankeen Kestrel and a Wedge-tailed Eagle all presented themselves during our visit to the Behn River. Even the local wildlife respects the presence of the freshwater crocodiles and they do not drink from the edge of the pools.
