These dogs were rescued by Chinese activists before they could be slaughtered for meat. According to this article from the NPR site , such rescues are occuring more regularly as dogs are increasingly becoming pets. A good story from China for once.

The campaign to moralize meat has largely been a failure. If that means volunteering at a dog rescue or giving money to PETA, all while eating and using animals, at least you’re doing something. These birds can learn to pull a string to retrieve a short stick, use the stick to pull out a longer one, then use the long stick to draw out a piece of meat. An animal control officer said it was clear the dog was trying to defend the woman, whom he didn’t know.
