There could definitely be more pockets. BP 30 has zippers both in the front, like a standard rucksack, and in the back, like camera rucksacks. To strap my scope in comfortably ahead of the trip, I would open the back, but once in the field, to quickly take it out I would open the front zipper. If it is so good, what are the cons?

While snakes protect their eggs, and may protect their young for a short period of time after they hatch, baby snakes are very soon on their own. What if all else fails and there are definitely no parents around? Not so with birds, who are taken care of by either the mother or both parents until they are old enough to fly.

A camera and my binoculars occupied a seat next to me, periodically protected with a Ziploc bag when we moved from place to place or when a passing shower threatened. The birding was relatively easy. I sat in the boat, Floyd, our guide, worked the motor, and Brian fished on the bow. Beautiful shallows. Turns out, I got my wish!

This park protects the primary rainforest of the Tarcoles River basin, together with the one of the three remaining populations of Scarlet Macaws in the country. For me the definite stars of the tour were a great many Ospreys. Anyway, I had no plans of swimming. Off to the Macaw Lodge, over the hills skirting the Carara National Park.

You never know what your pooch may encounter while sniffing around the edges of the park and he needs to be protected in case he comes across a wild animal (like a squirrel) or simply an unhealthy dog. The part that I definitely believe is laudable, and I can get behind, is in the final chapter: "Exploited to Extinction.". For only $450,000, we could buy almost all of the habitat neded to protect Ecuador's remaining frogs. But he constantly wonders where and when and how much we should intervene, which I suppose is laudable.

I had neither seen before nor heard of an example of a leucistic* Ruddy Duck but a quick Google search let me know that this is definitely not the first (not surprisingly). It does fit into a medium backpack (though keep in mind that it’s heavy, almost 3 pounds) and definitely onto the backseat of a car. This is a hefty book, 560 pages long and dimensions of 6.3 inches, which makes it just a little too large to be a field guide. The design focuses attention on the photographs.
