It will allow China to bid for more than 100 tonnes of ivory stockpiled in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe through culling and natural deaths. The UN Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) meeting in Geneva voted in favour of China becoming a licensed importer.

This was proposed as an example of what we now call “stabilizing selection” … variation is constantly introduced into populations, but every now and then “selective forces” culls the variation out. There may be more birds and mammals per square kilometer in South Africa. It actually hit me, slamming into my windshield.

Take an example, Tembe Elephant Park in South Africa. Lions from Tembe have founded new populations across Africa, reducing the pressure on Tembe’s other predators. And culls of Nyala have been proposed. We can’t afford just to let nature be nature any more. Not if we want to hang on to what we have left.
