Indeed, can you truly experience the wonder of nature from the confines of a vehicle? Barbed wire fences are terrible for wildlife, snaring large birds and mammals alike…but for smaller passerines, they sure make good perches. Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend. In the last few years, birders in Costa Rica started noticing strange mango species in the Golfito/Puntarenas region of the country. The strange birds were identified as Veraguan Mangos and they have now officially been added to the Costa Rican national bird list. have found their way to Costa Rica.

Hornbills are spectacular under any circumstances, but when a pair lands in a bush beside you at eye-level and begin mutual preening , it makes for a spectacular experience. My fiance and I drove nearly two hours to the Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area in rural Indiana to watch them come in for the evening. I chose the owl.

It is slightly larger than Costa Rica, and in the most strategic places it has a well-developed infrastructure. Those large international agencies use reputable local ground agents, and in my experience this creates a safety cocoon around the travellers.
