It would be wonderfully dramatic to be able to say: I'm going to fight for animals rather than for language , but it's not that clear cut. And it usually involves exchanges with non-vegans.

There's no "compassion" in the process. I wouldn't do it to a dog, and I shouldn't do it to a chicken/sheep/cow/pig. Their claim is that what has become the customary way to take sentient nonhumans from babyhood to untimely death is not humane. It's cruel. It's impersonal and hideously ugly and the animals suffer greatly.

While visiting another set of children who have a lizard in a tank as well as a dog, the dog is called "he" but the lizard is called "it." All animals except the dog are called "it" (I did a little experiment to see what would happen). I remember that as a child I called all cats "she" and dogs "he" in the absence of a name.

We "traditionally" have applied our social mores in some places and not others, and we should go back to "tradition," which I bet has something to do with continuing to care about our dogs while continuing to feign care for "farm animals," as they're value is as food only. The grackles might well be found here anyway as they like the wet habitat in Florida, but as an extra enticement, visitors feed the alligators with hot dogs and there is always a little something left over for a cheeky omnivore. Boat-tailed Grackles count eggs and chicks as part of their diet and they were well represented here today.
