In Chile I got the best view of an Andean Condor of the entire trip while having a cheeky poo under a monkey puzzle pine on the side of a volcano. In the Spanish Pyrenees I saw my first Alpine Chough while making yellow snow.

A delicious surprise and lunch made all the more memorable by the presence of tropical birds, good company, and a wild “pet” tarantula. More interesting was a troop of Spider Monkeys that ranged through the canopy of old growth trees, around eight total that shook the branches with swings on long grasping arms and tails.

We managed to see both species of monkey, though – so we were ultimately well satiated. Crisscrossed by 24″ pipelines transporting oil from numerous offshore platforms, oil companies exercised the strongest presence here. Occasional fly-bys of pairs and trios of Red-bellied Macaws kept us on our toes.

We also saw a small group of Guianan Red Howler Monkeys feeding nearby. The intention was to exit through the small coastal village and return home via the main road but that plan was thwarted by a gate across the road which barred access to the various oil companies’ compounds. Turquoise Tanager.

Our visit had two main purposes, one was to experience the exotic biodiversity of the lowland Choco forest and its birds, and the other was to gauge the state of conservation in this area that has been highly criticized due to the deforestation caused by a the logging company Botrosa.
