I read the following in a book about the pharmaceutical industry by Marcia Angell (the first woman to serve as the editor of the New England Journal of Medicine and currently a Senior Lecturer at the Harvard Medical School) called The Truth about the Drug Companies. It is about the Bayh-Dole Act and it has really stuck with me.

In a brief tour of a particular biotech research company, I was taken to the animal lab. This adorable poster that draws you in to the sweet faces of these animals basically proclaims that it is a good thing to use their bodies for medical research, which almost always leads to pain and death. It was a jarring moment.

I've decided to quit my book club, which I dearly love, because of a member who works in medical research and supports animal experimentation. And researching the company she works for makes me wonder whether the clinical trials she sells actually include animal experiments. And like I said, I love the other people in it.
