The Humane Society has another great investigation into the shady practices of a corporate giant. Not so, says the Humane Society. Documented USDA violations at some of Petland's breeders and suppliers included dirty, unkempt enclosures; inadequate shelter from the cold; dogs kept in too small cages; and inadequate veterinary care.

Their fierce tendency to bite means the bander is often as relieved as the bird is when they finally part company. You never know how each shot will turn out which is one of the reasons I love documenting these moments.

Revenge Birding (Shanghai, early June 2022)

After writing this last sentence, I looked up the species in the HBW and found the sentence “Song poorly documented” in the appropriate section, while with regard to calls, the description is that “call is a two-note raspy nasal ‘ryeeh-reh’”. Another – much rarer – drongo at Nanhui is the Ashy Drongo.

And, Essay #195, “Our Human Values: The Ugly,” describes the standoff between catfish loving Double-crested Cormorants and catfish farmers in the Missouri Valley. I’m not sure if “the Ugly” refers to the cormorant itself or human reaction (catfish farmers are officially allowed to shoot the birds).
