Dulan County is a large county in east-central Qinghai, China. Not in a zoo but in the wild, despite the fence in the background. Sparsely populated and at an average altitude of 3200 meters, it has a bit of an end-of-the-world feel to it, particularly the ranger station at around 4000 meters, where we stayed for a few nights.

Take that, hummingbirds. Purple Swamphen. Almost vulgar, these colors. Red-breasted Flycatcher. Red collared Dove. Variable Wheatear.

The species was bred at the zoo of Memphis, Tennesee ( source ). Similar to the (fortunately now gradually changing) situation among humans in China, these birds seem to prefer males over females. I guess the females feel that the blue of the bower treasures works well with their eyes. But you will certainly like the Wompoo Fruit Dove.
