According to this article from the NPR site , such rescues are occuring more regularly as dogs are increasingly becoming pets. A good story from China for once. These dogs were rescued by Chinese activists before they could be slaughtered for meat.

Similar to the (fortunately now gradually changing) situation among humans in China, these birds seem to prefer males over females. If you live in Australia, do not even think of getting this bird as a pet, as “99.99% of these Galahs sold in Australian markets are trapped from the wild” (source).

China is developing very fast, and Shanghai is developing even faster. It is a wild bird, so it is different from the pigeons which are kept by people as pets (which sometimes also come to our compound). Some are even building nests and having chicks here inside our compound. The Spotted Dove is a very common pigeon in Shanghai.

And when Foer writes that he approves of farms that treat their animals the way we treat pet dogs, that's his real message. Not Eating Animals.

As a vegan, part of what I believe is that bringing animals onto this planet to use them as food or as pets isn't ethical. The concept of creating when you can adopt is the same with people and animals, yes, but desiring and creating an animal as a pet isn't exactly the same when you unpack it all. Some don't. Others don't.

In Thailand, apparently, the number of Oriental Magpie-Robins has seriously declined in some areas apparently, partly because of poaching for the pet bird trade as the birds are good singers ( source ). No surprise then that the species is listed as Vulnerable. Fortunately, they are quite common in Shanghai.

In Kangding, there is a rather opulent bird hide – two stories, solid construction, spacious, lots of glass, a separate paved parking lot, though mysteriously (and as far as I can tell from my experience of living in China for almost 20 years, not indicative of fundamentally different physical needs of Chinese people) missing a bathroom.

A study found that for Plain Prinia , egg characteristics in a mainland China location with many cuckoos make it much easier to spot cuckoo eggs than in a Taiwan location with few cuckoos ( source ). On the other hand, in the West, mice, and rats are also kept as pets, maybe with the same logic.
