Are Farm Animals Usually Killed in a Humane Manner?

Critter News

He asked whether cows, chickens, sheep and some of the other animals that we eat are usually treated and killed in a humane manner. The meat industry will say yes, of course, all animals are treated and killed humanely. For some people, it is inhumane to eat meat in any situation, no matter how well the animal is treated prior to and during slaughter. For other people, “humane” means it is okay to eat the animal as long as the following conditions are met: 1.

Why Do Animals Exist?

Creature Talk

This weekend I got into a rather passionate debate with some friends of friends about animal rights. One of them was pretty educated about the evils of factory farming, and said that she didn’t eat much meat because she had to know where it came from. Her husband on the other hand, didn’t know much about factory farming at all, though he was curious about what I had to say and was a good, respectful listener. “To eat animals.&#.

What Matters to Animals…

Creature Talk

The weekend of June 13th and 14th I went to an animal rights conference in the Twin Cities called Their Lives, Our Voices. It was called “In Defense of Actual Animals&# , and it was fantastic. As I sit here writing this, animals across the world are being slaughtered by the thousands every second. As I’m sitting here in my comfy chair, chickens and pigs and cows and so many other kinds of animals are being strung up by their legs and getting their throats cut.

The Romain Rolland quote I posted last week has been on my mind a lot lately: To a man whose mind is free there is something even more intolerable in the sufferings of animals than in the sufferings of man. But thousands of animals are uselessly butchered every day without a shadow of remorse. The menu was very meat-centric: chicken, shrimp, and really, really rare steak. Farm Sanctuary needs help.

4 The Love Of Animals

Farm Sanctuary recently came to the aid of six male Holstein calves, several just days old, who had been abandoned without food or water and left for dead. Farm Sanctuary operates the country’s largest farm animal rescue and adoption network. Every year, they assist with urgent placement needs, particularly in cruelty cases involving large numbers of animals. Hal Herzog’s “ Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat ” (Harper 2011), though fascinating, is ultimately depressing for vegans and animal rights activists. Over at Animal Rights and AntiOppression , we’ve been discussing tactics and sharing our thoughts and experiences about what works and doesn’t work when it comes to advocacy. Well, as it turns out neither a trip to a slaughterhouse nor killing an animal yourself is powerful enough to make people go vegan.

To date we have welcomed more than 175 animals to the sanctuary, and there have been more than 80 who have peacefully passed away while in our care.&#.

His passion and compassion for humans is immense, but he appears to have some kind of mental block with nonhuman animals. He romanticizes his childhood usage of animals as if that was the right way to do it , and he longs for those days. In " Food for the Soul ," Kristof once again yearns for the farm of his childhood which, for him, had "soul." What that means is that it wasn't a factory-farm operation. The New York Times ' Nicholas D. Kristof frustrates me.

One message is that there's nothing wrong with eating animals, and in fact it's fantastic and thrilling and a win-win-win (people-planet-profits) when you eat animals that were "produced" by Polyface Farms. We eat animals, and the CAFO system is an evil, filthy, cruel one, but it doesn't have to be that way. The moral of the story is that it's all about the way we farm animals, not that we farm them that is what needs changing. (Sigh.)

Getting Emotional

Sometimes being an animal rights advocate is emotionally exhausting. Last night I was watching Animal Planet, as I often do, and the show was about polar bears in the wild. What immediately hit me after getting so emotional about this is how nature is kind in comparison to the horrible cruelties humans impose on non-human animals, especially “food&# animals. Chickens, turkeys, pigs and other farmed animals get nothing of the sort.

A Self-Interested Reason to Not Eat Meat

Animal Ethics

Here’s another self-interested reason to not eat meat: Drug-resistant bacteria are routinely found in beef, chicken, and pork sold in supermarkets. last year—28 million pounds—went to pigs, chickens, and cows, which in turn creates a perfect breeding ground for antibiotic-resistant super germs. Many of these antibiotics are routinely added to the feed of healthy animals to promote rapid weight gain. Slaughter’s bill banning the routine use of antibiotics in animal feed.

On Letting Your Emotions Rule the Day

Bea directed me to the Animal Welfare Special Report at TheHill.com , in which Rep. David Scott (D-Ga), who is the chairman of the Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Subcommittee of the House Committee on Agriculture draws a line in the sand regarding the animals we use and how we use them. A prime example of this is our concern for the welfare of animals in agriculture.". We have a tendency as a society to anthropomorphize our animals, especially our pets.

But the method she advocates for reaching those goals—raising grass-eating, pasture-foraging farm animals—would appear to be notoriously difficult to reproduce on a scale large enough to harvest enough meat, at a reasonable cost, for all the people wanting to eat meat in this country, let alone the world. Niman for pasturing the animals to provide all the beef, turkey, chicken and pork eaten in this country?

Another Reason to Go Vegetarian

Animal Ethics

We can thank factory farming for yet another antibiotic-resistant supergerm: Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). In recent years, MRSA has been found in retail cuts of chicken, pork, beef and other meats—a particularly worrisome trend since MRSA can be contracted simply by handling infected cuts of meat. Smith studied two large Midwestern hog farms and found ST398, the virulent strain of MRSA, in 45 percent of farmers and 49 percent of hogs.
