The birds have dispersed rather widely: Four of the birds have already crossed the Sahara; two are in southern Chad, one is in northern Nigeria and the fourth one is in Burkina Faso. Birds, technology, and science together are simply fascinating. Tiny satellite tracking tags allowed scientists from the British Trust for Ornithology to track five cuckoos on their 5,000 km migration to Africa.

The growing wealth of citizen science data has not yet been widely exploited by economists as a source of information about recreational values of non-market environmental goods. We have a paper under review where we collaborate with Chad Wilsey from Audubon, using Audubon’s forecasts of how climate change is likely to affect bird ranges. Birders derive “value” from birding.

Africa’s Barbets

This last mentioned giant version has been seen by very few birders as its range coincides with the unstable, war-torn and bandit-ravaged zone stretching from northern Uganda to Southern Sudan, south-eastern Chad and northern Central African Republic! He discovered numerous new species for science including this barbet and was the first person to confirm the existence of both Gorillas and Pygmies.
