Listening for birds on Poas Volcano and other high mountain areas would require cool weather clothing but it would be much more quiet and peaceful and could also come with the side benefits of Dusky Nightjars, Bare-shanked Screech-Owls , and maybe even Unspotted Saw-whet Owl. At times, Red-eyed Vireos can be just as abundant.

After writing this last sentence, I looked up the species in the HBW and found the sentence “Song poorly documented” in the appropriate section, while with regard to calls, the description is that “call is a two-note raspy nasal ‘ryeeh-reh’”. We started our Singapore bird list at Pasir Ris and leaving the train station we were delighted to see several Cattle Egrets on the grass and several photographers. We encountered several bird species there including a Yellow-rumped Flycatcher and a nesting Red-breasted Parakeet. Sunda Scops Owl. Yellow-rumped Flycatcher.

Then, we became birders again, noting Common Mynas and Eastern Cattle Egrets on the terraced lawns, Yellow-footed Pigeons, European-collared and Red-collared Doves in the trees bordering the garden squares. Luckily, I didn’t have to look hard to find the Dusky Eagle-Owl’s nest. It was a big owl.

On my recent visit I managed to see specialties like Spotted Eagle Owls , Swee Waxbills , Cape Sugarbirds , Malachite Sunbirds and Cape Francolins. Spotted Eagle Owl. Cattle Egret in spring flowers. The deep reedbeds and pools hide many species, including some hard-to-see hippos! Cape of Good Hope. Greater Flamingos.

The auto tour route at SNWR even holds Great Horned Owls ( Bubo virginianus ). This refuge offers such a wide variety of species, that I wrote a post awhile back showing several species of wading birds in the same location on the auto tour route. We follow the tire tracks in an off-white, salty soil and then, without a word of warning, our guide/driver turns into the bushes, driving left and right… until one and then another Short-eared Owl flushes in front of us. The next two species are the Southern Grey Shrike and the Tawny Pipit , also characteristic for this habitat type.
