Listers are quick to put aside their condemnation of invasive species once they attain that coveted status of exotic: not native, not fully naturalized, but established well enough to be countable by the prevailing authority. That’s where we come in.

Camooweal, Queensland

Black-fronted Dotterels , Magpie-larks and Willie Wagtails ran along the muddy edges where there was evidence of feral pigs. Camooweal may be a small outback town, but it has numerous bird species to enchant you before you head either 190 kilometres/118 miles east towards Mt Isa or 470 kilometres/292 miles west to Tennant Creek.

The Domestic Turkey and the First Thanksgiving

The very first thing we notice about this large member of the Galliformes is that there is a wild version and a domestic version, and although the two are rather different, they are both given the same species name, Meleagris gallopavo. This is not entirely unknown among domestic animals, but many domesticates have no living wild version.

For Borneo I’ll be accepting the split endemic species listed in Myers (2009), some of which I think eBird could at least offer as subspecies options (I’d also welcome an eBird app that works). Species are listed by family according to the order eBird spits them out to me in. Indigo Flycatcher. LARIDAE (GULLS AND TERNS).

I am certainly not complaining though, as a repetitive working routine that will lead to around 500 species a year is better than the working routine I had in the late 2000′s, where seeing more than 250 species a year would have been extraordinary. 149 checklists were submitted, accounting for 465 species. You may notice a few non-commital “sp” entries and/or a few domestic/feral/hybrid forms. Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis). 7 beats contributed their sightings from 7 countries (Hong Kong, UK, China, USA, Serbia, Australia and, of course, Costa Rica).
