For instance, you can own a lion in Alabama, but not in California. In Oregon you can’t own any “dangerous” wild animals, but you can get a special permit for a service monkey and anyone can fill their backyard with giraffes. You can own a gorilla in Indiana, but not a bear in Michigan.

Chum monkeys are those who are paid to keep the chum flying off the back of the boat.* I can’t even imagine how awesome it would be to have albatrosses in a chum scrum, something I have never seen, though my limited time on boats off the coast of California did allow me to see Brown Pelicans mixing it up in the chum scrum.

My third trip was six months spend working on a monkey project in the jungles of Uganda. In Uganda I would often cross paths with Chimpanzees as they went about their lives and I went about mine (which was living with a troop of monkeys). In California I smelt the breath a Blue Whale as it passed feet beneath my boat.

When I was a small kid I lived in Southern California, and my parents used to take me to Disneyland, the Happiest Place on Earth(TM). Can’t do a post on Kinabatangan without the amazing Bornean endemic Probosis Monkey. I was lucky to see one Oriental Darter in Bangkok. On the river, I saw a dozen every day.

California Quail are familiar birds to West Coast birders of North America, and Kiwis too now. One such individual was Sir George Grey, who liberated many animals on his estate (mercifully on an island), including wildebeest, monkeys, zebras, wallabies, deer, cassowaries, emu and kookaburras.
